What to do about pigeon dysentery? It can be treated with the Chinese herb licorice
When a pigeon suffers from dysentery, its droppings are as thin as water, green with a yellow tinge. The sick pigeon huddles in the coop, drinking large amounts of water but not eating, and its condition worsens by the day.
Buy licorice, mash it up and administer it to the sick pigeon by mouth, and also soak licorice in water for the sick pigeon to drink. The next day the droppings had already changed from thin to dry. Continue treating with licorice, and in less than a week the sick pigeon can recover.
According to "Compendium of Materia Medica" by Li Shizhen, "Licorice, sweet and neutral in nature and flavor, mainly treats cold and heat pathogenic qi of the five zang and six fu organs, and resolves a hundred toxins," and "treats red and white dysentery, and taken it works immediately."
