I. Variety Origin

Bred in 1999 by the Institute of Crops, Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences. Former code: Jing 7506. Parental combination: Xingshi A/Yueguang//C93010. Approved in Beijing in 2002.

II. Characteristics and Traits

A spring mid-season rice variety. In the Beijing plain area, the full growth period as spring mid-season rice is 155 days (sown in early May) to 165 days (sown in mid-April). Compact plant type, upright leaves, relatively light leaf color, medium tillering ability. Plant height 110 cm, effective panicles per mu 195,000, panicle-setting rate 78.9%, average grains per panicle 126, seed-setting rate 87.2%, 1000-grain weight 25.5 g. It is an intermediate-type variety balancing panicle number and grain number.

The panicle is spindle-shaped, panicle length about 20 cm, medium grain density (60-70 grains per 10 cm), grain elliptical, length-to-width ratio 2.35, brown rice length-to-width ratio 1.9. Glume and glume tip color yellow-white, awnless or with a slight tip awn, glume hairs short and few. Resistant to panicle neck blast, stripe leaf blight and brown spot, moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight, susceptible to small grain sclerotium disease. Drought-tolerant and low-temperature-tolerant, good yellowing, relatively strong lodging resistance. Average yield in regional trials 553.1 kg per mu; under conditions of matching good seed with good methods, it has the potential for 700 kg per mu.

Quality analysis: brown rice rate 82.3%, milled rice rate 74.2%, head rice rate 69.5%, chalky grain rate 7%, chalkiness degree 1.3%, transparency grade 2, alkali spreading value grade 7, gel consistency 52, amylose content 16.4%, protein content 9.1%.

III. Key Points of Cultivation Techniques

The suitable sowing and transplanting period can be delayed by about 15 days compared with medium-late maturing spring rice varieties, which facilitates seedling raising and benefits water-saving cultivation. For single-season spring rice, sowing should preferably be during April 25-30, with transplanting in early June; for mid-season rice or wheat stubble rice, sowing can be in early May, striving for early transplanting, and seedling age should not exceed 50 days. Thin sowing to raise strong seedlings is required, with a sowing rate of about 100 g per sq m. Transplanting specifications: row spacing 25-30 cm, hill spacing 15 cm, 2-3 seedlings per hill. Fertilizer and water management should adopt the principle of steady promotion; when the total stem number reaches the planned panicle number (200,000-240,000 per mu), drainage can be carried out for control. In fields of medium fertility, the pure nitrogen application rate is 12-14 kg per mu.

Prevention of small grain sclerotium disease: In early-stage management, avoid applying too much nitrogen fertilizer at one time or irrigating too deeply. In the mid-stage, pay attention to drainage so that the stem base of the seedlings becomes thick and hard. The control method is similar to that for sheath blight. In diseased areas, Jinggangmycin can be sprayed 1-2 times from late July to early August.

IV. Suitable Planting Areas

Suitable for cultivation in the Beijing area as spring mid-season rice or as old seedling cultivation for wheat stubble rice.
