How good is the Huayou 123 rice variety?
Huayou 128 is a three-line hybrid late-maturing early rice combination bred by pairing the sterile line Y Huanong A with the restorer line R128. It is suitable for early and late season planting in areas outside northern Guangdong, and in the northern Guangdong rice region it can also be used as middle or late rice according to local conditions. It passed crop variety approval in Guangxi in December 2001 and in Guangdong in March 2002.
1. Yield performance: In the late seasons of 2000 and 2001 it took part in the provincial regional trial, with yields per mu of 449 kg and 445 1 kg respectively, increasing yield by 4 4% and 5 5% compared with the control combination Peiza Shuangqi, both not significant, ranking fifth and first respectively. In the late season of 2001 it took part in the province-wide production trial, with a yield per mu of 499 5 kg, ranking first among the 4 test combinations. In Guangdong it was trial-planted on 1 3 mu, with a yield per mu of 500-600 kg; in Guangxi it was trial-planted on 3 5 mu, with a yield per mu of 472-684 kg, about 10% higher than the locally promoted combination Peiza Shuangqi and slightly higher than the high-yield combination Teyou 63.
2. Characteristics: Huayou 128 is a temperature-sensitive three-line hybrid rice combination. Its whole growth period is 126-130 days for the early season and about 115 days for the late season, similar to Peiza Shuangqi. It has fairly strong tillering ability, vigorous growth, a moderately compact plant type, thick and upright leaves, and smooth color transition. Plant height is around 105 cm, with 18-200,000 panicles per mu, panicle length about 21 cm, 140-180 grains per panicle, seed-setting rate 80%-95%, and 1000-grain weight 22-23 g. In the late season the rice appearance is grade two, with head rice rate 65 5%, chalky grain rate 14%, chalkiness degree 2 1%, length-to-width ratio 2 6, amylose content 23 3%, and gel consistency 34 mm. The early and late rice grains respectively have 9 and 10 indicators reaching the ministerial first- and second-grade standards for high-quality rice. It is moderately resistant to rice blast, with an overall population resistance frequency of 83 3%, among which the resistance frequencies to the Zhong B and Zhong C populations are 89% and 58% respectively; it is moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight, with an overall resistance rating of grade 3.
3. Cultivation points: (1) Sow and transplant early at the right time. For the early season in the central and southern regions, sow at the end of February to early March and transplant in early April; for the late season, sow from July 10-15 and transplant after a 20-25 day seedling period; in the north, when used as middle or late rice, full heading should be arranged within the safe heading period. (2) Transplant 6-80,000 basic seedlings per mu and control effective panicles at about 200,000. (3) Apply sufficient basal fertilizer, apply topdressing early, increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and appropriately supplement fertilizer for filling the grains. (4) Keep shallow water for greening, thin water for tillering, heavy dew with light drying, shallow water for heading, and alternate dry and wet for maturity; do not cut off water too early. (5) In places where the Zhong C population of rice blast is more common, special attention should be paid to disease prevention.
