Introduction to the Huangzeng Simiao No. 3 Rice Variety
Huangzeng Simiao No. 3 rice was developed by the municipal Academy of Agricultural Sciences, which independently undertook and completed the "96-2-48-4" project of the Ninth Five-Year Plan under the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Commission's "High-Quality Rice Breeding Experiment Project." It was bred through conventional hybridization using a mixture of Aisi Simiao Selection 8 and Zengxiangzhan varieties as the paternal parent and a Xiangsimiao line as the maternal parent. It is a high-quality, high-yield, disease-resistant, widely adaptable medium-maturing indica rice variety that can be planted in both early and late seasons. The full growth period is 130 days for the early season and about 120 days for the late season. Plant height is about 95 hundred meters, with an average of 180 grains per panicle, a seed-setting rate of 90-95%, and a 1000-grain weight of 21 grams. Grain quality is Grade 1 for the early season and Special Grade 2 for the late season. The cooked rice has a moderate taste. Resistance to rice blast is Grade 8 for the early season and Grade 5 for the late season. Resistance to bacterial leaf blight is Grade 3.5 for the early season and Grade 2 for the late season. The usual yield per mu for a single season is 450 kg, with high yields reaching over 600 kg. This variety has passed expert appraisal at the provincial level organized by the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Commission, which concluded: "This variety is a high-quality, high-yield variety of both early and late types, possesses certain production potential, meets the economic and technical targets of the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Commission's Ninth Five-Year Plan project, and is suitable for planting and production in various soil types outside rice blast areas within and beyond Guangzhou."
