Introduction to the Characteristics and Traits of the Jijing 69 Rice Variety
Jijing 69 was bred by the Rice Research Institute of the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1991 from the progeny of the cross 769/02428//Zhansan.
Characteristics and traits: Jijing 69 is sown from April 10 to 15, transplanted from May 20 to 25, heads from July 23 to 27, and matures around September 10. The growth period is 135 days and requires an effective accumulated temperature of 2650°C. Plant height is 95 cm, the stems are strong and resistant to lodging, the leaf color is light green, the flag leaf spreads horizontally after heading, tillering ability is strong, and the number of effective panicles per single plant can reach more than 36. The main panicle is about 21 cm long, with more than 150 filled grains per main panicle, excellent overall traits, and strong stress resistance. It is resistant to rice blast, sheath blight, and rice false smut, tolerant to drought, salt and alkali, resistant to cold and tolerant of frost, tolerant of fertilizer and resistant to lodging, with a moderate maturity period and mature stems at ripening. Yield components: 16.6 hills/sq m, 400 to 450 effective panicles, 100 filled grains per panicle, 96% seed-setting rate, and 1000-grain weight of 24.2 g. In the 3-year provincial regional trial from 1995 to 1997, the average yield per mu was 516.4 kg, 3.7% higher than the control Tengxi 138; in the 2-year provincial production trial from 1996 to 1997, the average yield per mu was 540.2 kg, 8.4% higher than the control Tengxi 138.
According to the analysis by the Rice and Rice Products Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, the rice quality of this variety is as follows: milled rice rate 75.8%, head rice rate 71.2%, transparency grade 1, grain length-to-width ratio 1.6, gelatinization temperature grade 7, gel consistency 63 mm, protein content 9.0%, and 12 other main indicators, reaching the Ministry-issued second-grade standard for high-quality rice.

Region and technology: Jijing 69 is suitable for planting in the medium-maturity rice-growing region of Jilin Province. It can also be cultivated in suitable areas of Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and other provinces and regions. At present, it has become the main medium-maturity cultivar in Jilin Province and one of the main cultivars in Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and other provinces and regions.
Cultivation procedures:
1. Sparse sowing to grow strong seedlings. Before sowing, the seeds should be strictly disinfected with a seed-soaking agent to prevent bakanae disease. Use dry seedling raising; at sowing, use 150 to 200 g of germinated seeds per sq m. After emergence, ventilate and harden the seedlings in a timely manner to prevent damping-off.
2. Timely transplanting. On the basis of growing strong seedlings, transplant around May 20, with a plant-to-hill spacing of 30 cm x 20 cm and 3 seedlings per hill, ensuring transplanting quality.
3. Reasonable fertilization. Apply more farmyard manure and combine with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Apply chemical fertilizer per hectare: pure nitrogen (N) 150 kg, pure phosphorus (P2O5) 75 kg, pure potassium (K2O) 100 kg.
4. Scientific irrigation. During the whole growth period, mainly use moist irrigation, drain and sun-dry the field at the mid-stage to enhance lodging resistance.
5. Control of diseases, insects, weeds and pests. Disease control: before and after heading, use Fuji No. 1 emulsifiable concentrate to control rice blast. 5 to 7 days before heading, use luo'antong or DT fungicide to control rice false smut. Insect control: in early to mid-June, apply 7.75 kg of 5% phorate per hectare mixed with 300 kg of fine sand to control rice leafminer; before July 10 to 20, use shachongshuang to control rice stem borer. Weed control: 5 to 7 days after transplanting, use butachlor and caokexing, nongdeshi, etc. to control barnyardgrass, and maintain a water layer for 5 to 7 days after application.
