Rice Research Institute of Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences selects high-quality rice varieties

At the recently concluded evaluation of high-quality rice varieties (lines) in Jilin Province, "Jigeng 81" and "Jigeng 83", bred by the Rice Research Institute of the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, were rated as "high-quality rice varieties", and another 6 lines were rated as "high-quality rice lines".

It is reported that this high-quality rice variety (line) evaluation was the third such event held after 1995 and 1998. The 10 high-quality rice varieties selected in the previous two events have already been promoted and applied on a large scale in production thanks to their good quality and high yield, with a cumulative promotion area of 1.2 million hectares over 3 years, and the processed rice has been sold in large quantities abroad and to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong and other provinces and municipalities.

The two high-quality varieties and 6 high-quality lines selected this time were chosen by the evaluation committee from the 28 varieties (lines) entered, in accordance with the relevant assessment standards of the Ministry of Agriculture, through comprehensive evaluation of milling, appearance, cooking, nutrition and eating quality.

Jilin Province is a famous high-quality japonica rice production area in China. According to Li Xueqin, deputy director of the provincial agricultural committee, in order to create the "Jilin Rice" brand, enhance the competitiveness of Jilin rice in domestic and international markets, and open up grain markets, Jilin Province began selecting high-quality rice varieties suited to production development needs and market demand in 1995, and vigorously promoted their use. At present, the sown area of improved rice varieties bred in the province has accounted for more than 90% of the total area, completely changing the situation in which high-quality rice varieties depended entirely on introduction from Japan.
