"Jinzhu No. 1" is a new medium-late rice variety developed through systematic selection, variety comparison, and regional trials by Niu Jing, a researcher at the Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences and a Tianjin-appointed rice breeding expert, and his team. It is the first new variety in China developed through indica-japonica hybridization with major promotion value. It passed achievement appraisal in 1992. This variety is of the japonica type, with a full growth period of 150 days in the Beijing-Tianjin region, a seedling bed period of 35-40 days, and a main field period of 110-105 days.

Seedling growth is relatively vigorous with a well-developed root system. The main stem has 15 leaves, plant height 90-100 cm, relatively hard stems, a small flag leaf angle, a relatively loose panicle type, and some have short awns. The earing rate is 85.6%, with an average of 108 grains per panicle and a seed-setting rate of 90%. The grains are short and round, with a 1000-grain weight of 26 g, an average yield of 500-600 kg per mu, and high-yield plots can reach 650 kg. Its rice quality is excellent. According to testing by the Rice Quality Supervision and Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, the brown rice rate is 83.8%, the milled rice rate is 77%, the head rice rate is 67.5%, the chalkiness rate is 1.6%, the chalkiness degree is 2.26%, the transparency is >grade 2, the gel consistency is 88 mm, the amylose content is 19.2%, and the protein content is 9.3%. It has good cooking quality and meets the standards for high-quality rice. It has medium tillering ability, is resistant to lodging, likes fertilizer, is drought-tolerant, cold-tolerant, and has outstanding disease resistance. In the 1987 national rice blast resistance identification, its disease resistance ranked first among japonica rice varieties nationwide, with leaf blast at grade 2 and neck blast at grade 1.6, and it is also resistant to bacterial leaf blight and rice false smut.

This variety has a wide range of adaptability. It is suitable for planting as wheat-stubble rice or middle rice in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, and can be planted as single-season rice in northern Shaanxi, central and southern Liaoning, Ningxia, **, and other places.
