Introduction to the New Hybrid Gastrodia Variety Beinong No. 2
Beinong No. 2 hybrid Gastrodia is a high-quality new hybrid line produced by the Beijing Beinong Kexin Agricultural Development Center using "Jingma No. 2" as the male parent and "Yunma No. 1" as the female parent after artificial pollination. The successful breeding of this variety has solved the shortage of excellent hybrid varieties for cultivating Gastrodia in China's high mountains, hills, and especially plain areas. After promotion and planting across the country, it has the characteristics of high yield, high quality, no pests or diseases, simple management methods, fast growth, and high economic returns, and is deeply welcomed by the majority of Gastrodia growers.
Nearly 5 years of promotion have shown that Beinong No. 2 Gastrodia has good marketability, with large, round, and plump tubers (generally weighing about 300 g, with the largest reaching 500 g), and superior quality. In particular, its reproductive capacity is extremely strong and its propagation coefficient is large. When cultivated together with Jingnong No. 2 Armillaria mellea, the yield is high. For outdoor imitation-wild cultivation in mountainous and hilly areas, using 500 g of seed tubers per sq m can produce 15-20 kg of fresh Gastrodia; for indoor box cultivation, using 150-200 g of seed tubers per box (60 cm x 50 cm x 40 cm) can produce 5-6 kg of Gastrodia; for indoor bag cultivation (45 cm x 45 cm), using 100-120 g of seed tubers can produce 3 kg of fresh Gastrodia. The suitable production temperature is 14-28°C, with the optimum temperature being 20-25°C, and the total accumulated temperature during the growing period is about 3800°C. For outdoor winter planting (November to February of the following year), harvesting takes place after 10-12 months; for spring planting (March to May), harvesting takes place after 7-8 months; for indoor cultivation with artificial temperature control at about 20°C, it can be harvested in 6 months, with 2 cultivation cycles per year. This variety has become a replacement variety for increasing yield and quality in traditional Gastrodia production areas, and is also an excellent variety for developing Gastrodia production in plain areas.
