Detailed introduction to the rice variety Hang 931
Hang 931 is a new high-quality early indica variety bred by the Hangzhou Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Zhejiang Province in 1986 through crossing Hongtu 31 with fragrant rice.
Characteristics and traits: in the 1994 Zhejiang Province early rice breeding joint variety comparison, the yield was 421.2 kg per mu, 2.7% higher than the control Zhe 852; in the 1994-1995 Hangzhou regional trial, the average yields per mu were 413 kg and 351 kg, 7.97% higher than the control Zhe 852 and equal to it, and 2.49% higher than the high-quality control Zhou 903; in the 1996 Hangzhou production trial, it increased by 23.6 kg per mu compared with the high-quality control Zhou 903, a yield increase of 7.83%; in Yuhang City in 1996-1997, in two years of contiguous per-mu demonstration in Yunhui Township on 32 mu and 105 mu, the yields per mu reached 546 kg and 528 kg, showing very good high yield potential and adaptability.
The growth period of Hang 931 is about 107 days, and it belongs to medium-maturing early indica; it has good cold tolerance at the seedling stage, relatively large flexibility in seedling age, strong tillering ability, and a high effective panicle rate, but the panicle layer is not uniform enough. According to two years of identification in 1995-1996, the average grade for rice blast was 3.67-1.8, with the highest grade being 5; the grade for bacterial leaf blight in 1995 was 2.53. This variety has excellent grain quality: brown rice rate 79.44, milled rice rate 72.48, head rice rate 55.15, chalkiness degree 4%, gelatinization temperature grade 3.6, gel consistency 71 mm, and amylose content 12.7%. This variety tastes excellent and has a delicate fragrance. After tasting by more than 100 person-times at 3 locations, it ranked second among 17 participating varieties. In 1996-1997, the Zhejiang Provincial Government listed it as one of the varieties purchased at high quality and favorable price.

Regions and techniques: Hang 931 is a variety that balances both panicle number and grain number. The sowing period is from late March to early April, and the seedling age is 30-35 days. Reasonable close planting should be adopted, with 30,000 clumps per mu and 120,000-150,000 seedlings after transplanting. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium should be applied in a reasonable combination to improve rice processing quality. Reasonable irrigation should be carried out, alternating dry and wet until maturity, to prevent too early water cutoff in the later stage, so as to reduce immature grains, dead grains, and chalkiness. Integrated control of diseases, insect pests, and weeds should focus on prevention, and high-concentration and high-dose pesticide application should be avoided so as not to increase pesticide residues in rice. Harvest at the right time, generally harvesting in sunny weather when about 85% fully ripe. After harvesting, it is best to spread and sun-dry on bamboo trays, thicken the drying layer, turn it in time, and dry it in stages, avoiding thin-layer exposure on cement ground, so as to improve the head rice rate of the rice and achieve high yield, quality advantage, and high efficiency.
