Detailed Introduction to the Rice Variety Fengbazhan
Variety Introduction:
Fengbazhan is a new Thai Simiao-type high-quality aromatic rice variety, with grain quality rated Grade 1 for the early season and Special Grade 2 for the late season. Analysis of grain samples by the Institute's Grain Chemistry and Processing Research Laboratory showed an amylose content of 22.3%, a gel consistency of 46 cm, and an alkali spreading value of 7.0; the cooked rice is fragrant, moderately soft and firm, good in eating quality, and does not harden after cooling. According to determinations by the China National Rice Research Institute, 8 indicators reached the Ministry-issued Grade 1 standard for high-quality rice.
In 1997, in both the early and late seasons, Fengbazhan was identified by the Institute's Plant Protection Research Laboratory as resistant to bacterial leaf blight (Group IV, grades 2-3); its total resistance frequency to all groups of rice blast was 81.0% (71.0% for Group B, 76.5% for Group C) and 75%, respectively. The full growth period is 126 days, and 115 days for the late season. This variety has light-colored leaves, slightly curved leaves in the early stage and straight leaves in the middle and late stages, a good plant type, a plant height of 100 cm, tolerance to fertilizer and resistance to lodging, a medium-to-slightly-high number of panicles, medium-sized panicles, good ripening color and grain filling, and a 1000-grain weight of 21-22 g. Fengbazhan is a new aromatic high-quality rice variety with medium yield, disease resistance, and moderate softness and firmness.
