How is the Fengliangyou No. 1 rice variety?

This variety is a new two-line hybrid rice variety bred jointly by the Rice Research Institute of Fengle Seed and the Northern Japonica Hybrid Center. Its main characteristics:

Exceptionally high grain quality. "Fengliangyou No. 1" has excellent grain quality, a crystal-clear appearance, no white belly, and good palatability. According to testing by the National Rice Testing Center, except for amylose (15%), the other 11 indicators all reached the first-grade high-quality rice standard. In 2001, it was rated a high-quality rice variety by the Anhui Provincial Agricultural Commission.

High yield. In the Anhui Provincial New Variety Regional Trial, it averaged a 5.02% yield increase over "Shanyou 63" in two years. In the 2000 production demonstration at the Hefei site, field yield measurement and acceptance by experts from the Municipal Agricultural Commission, Science and Technology Commission, and Agriculture and Forestry Bureau showed a yield of 773.7 kg, a 16% increase over the control "Xieyou 63". In 2001, in the 3,000-mu demonstration area in Dawei Township on the outskirts of Hefei, acceptance by the provincial "Tenth Five-Year Plan" rice research expert group showed a yield of over 700 kg per mu. The reasonable yield structure of this variety is: 140,000-160,000 panicles per mu, 180-220 grains per panicle, seed-setting rate above 85%, and 1,000-grain weight of 29 g. Farmers growing high-yield fields achieve about 650 kg per mu, and high-yield plots exceed 700 kg.

Moderate maturity and wide adaptability. For single-season middle rice in Anhui, sowing is in late April, and heading is in early August, 6-7 days earlier than "Shanyou 63". The grain-filling period is more than 5 days longer than that of "Shanyou 63", so the whole growth period is similar. The Fengle Rice Research Institute conducted staged sowing trials from 2001 to 2002, sowing once every 10 days from April 15 to June 15, for seven sowings in total, and yields were all above 600 kg, showing a wide suitable sowing period. In the past 3 years, trial plantings at thousands of sites across Anhui, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Zhejiang, Chongqing, Sichuan and Henan and other provinces have all succeeded, showing good adaptability.

Good resistance. Highly resistant to rice bacterial leaf blight, moderately resistant to rice blast, and especially valuable is its strong resistance to rice sheath blight. Throughout the whole growth period the stems are very clean and neat, and the late-stage ripening appearance is good, with green stems and yellow grains.

High economic value. The head rice rate of "Fengliangyou No. 1" commercial paddy is as high as 64%, yielding 8-10 jin more head rice per 100 jin of paddy than ordinary three-line hybrid rice. The grain quality is good and the market is smooth. Grain merchants who have handled "Fengliangyou No. 1" commercial paddy will track it down to purchase it. Generally, they order it from farmers in the field at a price of 5 fen to 8 fen per market jin above the market paddy price at the time. According to surveys, farmers growing "Fengliangyou No. 1" can increase yield by more than 50 kg per mu, and with commercial paddy selling for 0.1 yuan-0.2 yuan more per kg, farmers can increase income by more than 100 yuan per mu.

The following points should be noted in the promotion of "Fengliangyou No. 1":

This variety has a short sowing-to-heading time and a short effective tillering period, so transplanting should not be too sparse, with 15,000-18,000 hills per mu being preferable. Two grain seedlings per hill. "Fengliangyou No. 1" can achieve high yield through two cultivation approaches. Large-panicle type: within 130,000 panicles per mu, about 220 grains per panicle, 85% seed-setting rate, and a yield structure of more than 700 kg. The second type, balanced panicle-grain type: about 160,000 panicles per mu, 160-180 grains per panicle, 85% seed-setting rate, and a yield structure of more than 700 kg. By comparison, the second type is safer.

Prevent rice false smut at the heading stage. This variety has obvious two-stage grain-filling characteristics. The grain-filling period is long, so water should not be cut off too early in the late stage, and it should be harvested promptly at maturity; it must not be overripe, which would affect quality and yield.
