Variety name: Fengyou 559

Breeding units: Institute of Agricultural Sciences of the Coastal Region of Jiangsu Province, Rice Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences

Provincial approval status: Approved by the Jiangsu Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee

Characteristics: This variety is an indica-type three-line hybrid rice. When grown as mid-season rice in the middle and lower Yangtze River rice region, the average whole growth period is 137.1 days, 1.7 days later maturing than the control Shanyou 63. Plant height is 120.2 cm, plant type is moderate, tillering ability is strong, panicle and grain are well coordinated, and color turns well at maturity. Effective panicles per mu are 183,000, panicle length is 24 cm, total grains per panicle are 158.1, seed-setting rate is 83.4%, and 1000-grain weight is 25.1 g. Resistance: rice blast grade 7, bacterial leaf blight grade 5, brown planthopper grade 9. Main rice quality indicators: head rice rate 54.2%, length-to-width ratio 2.8, chalky grain rate 27%, chalkiness degree 3.5%, gel consistency 86 mm, amylose content 15.2%.

Yield performance: In 2001, it participated in the regional trial of the middle and lower Yangtze River mid-season indica late-maturing high-quality group, with an average yield of 606.33 kg per mu, 0.05% lower than the control Shanyou 63 (not significant); in 2002, in the continued trial, the average yield was 543.94 kg per mu, 1.1% lower than the control Shanyou 63 (not significant); the two-year regional trial average yield was 573.89 kg per mu, 0.6% lower than the control Shanyou 63. In the 2002 production trial, the average yield was 537.4 kg per mu, 3.25% lower than the control Shanyou 63.

Key cultivation techniques: 1. Sow at the right time: sow from mid-April to early May, with a sowing rate of 15 kg per mu, and seedling age of about 35 days; 2. Reasonable close planting: generally, in fields with ordinary fertility, transplant 18,000-20,000 hills per mu, with 1-2 grain seedlings per hill, and 70,000-80,000 basic seedlings per mu; 3. Scientific water management: about 20 days after transplanting, drain and sun the field in time to control the peak number of tillers to no more than 250,000, with final productive panicles of 160,000-180,000, keep the soil moist in the later stage, and stop water 5 days before harvest to ensure green stems and yellow grains; 4. Pest and disease control: pay attention to controlling the damage of rice blast, bacterial leaf blight, and rice planthopper.

Approval opinion: This variety meets the national rice variety approval standards and has passed approval. This variety has a moderate maturity period, medium yield, is susceptible to rice blast, moderately susceptible to bacterial leaf blight, and has excellent rice quality. It is suitable for planting as single-season mid-season rice in Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu in the Yangtze River basin (except the Wuling Mountain area) and in southern Henan in areas with light occurrence of rice blast.
