Technical Recommendations for Mid-to-Late Stage Rice Management in Arid Regions
The perennial rice planting area in Qina Town, Yongsheng County is 16,000 mu. As of June 6, the entire town has achieved full transplanting by relying on reservoir water storage and water lifted from Chenghai Lake for irrigation. However, due to the historically rare drought from September last year to July 19 this year, rice seedlings in parts of the town with no water sources and no mechanical wells have withered, and even areas with small water sources and mechanical wells for pumping irrigation find it difficult to guarantee timely irrigation, resulting in insufficient rice tillering. In response, the following management measures are recommended for mid-to-late stage rice management across the town.
I. Adapt measures to local conditions and convert paddy fields to dryland. Our town is located in the hot and dry area of the Jinsha River, with abundant heat resources. For partially withered seedlings, the fields can be plowed to develop autumn and winter vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc., or early-maturing hybrid corn can be planted.
II. For fields with relatively good water sources but unable to guarantee timely irrigation, resulting in insufficient tillering, additional nitrogen and potassium fertilizer can be applied. The specific operation is to apply 5-7.5 of urea and 7.5 of potassium sulfate per mu, to promote the formation of large panicles in rice, improve the seed-setting rate, and ultimately increase per-unit yield and total output.
