How is the rice variety Boyou 210?
Boyou 210 is a weakly photoperiod-sensitive late indica rice variety bred by the South China Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, from a cross between the male sterile line Bo A and the restorer line 210.
Characteristics: the whole growth period of this variety is 118-120 days, 2-3 days earlier than the main combinations of the same type; plant height is 88.5-96.8 cm; tillering ability is relatively strong; the stems are thick and sturdy, with strong lodging resistance; each panicle has 120-133 grains; the seed-setting rate is about 81%; and the 1000-grain weight is 22 g. From 1993 to 1994, it took part in the Guangdong provincial regional trial, with yields per mu of 415.1 kg and 402.0 kg respectively, increasing yield by 1% and 1.82% compared with the control Boyou 64; the yield increase was not significant, and it ranked second and first in the weakly photoperiod-sensitive group respectively. Under field cultivation, the yield per mu is generally 450 kg.
The grain quality is relatively good. Testing showed a brown rice rate of 81.24%, a milled rice rate of 75.24%, a head rice rate of 71.39%, transparency grade 1, grain length 5.8 mm, length-to-width ratio 2.7, chalkiness rate 3.2%, chalkiness degree 1.8%, gelatinization temperature grade 7, gel consistency 48 mm, amylose content 24.49%, and protein content 9.31%. The rice appearance grade was identified as special grade 2, reaching the Guangdong Province standard for high-quality export rice, and the cooked rice tastes good.
It has strong resistance and is resistant to the two main diseases in South China. Its resistance ratio to the whole population of rice blast is 96% (high resistance), among which its resistance ratio to group C, the dominant population of rice blast in Guangdong Province, is 100%, and it is moderately resistant to bacterial leaf blight. From after heading to the harvest period, it has strong stress resistance and does not senesce early; at harvest, the branches remain green and the stalks are waxy.
Breeder: South China Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Region and technology: Boyou 210 is suitable for planting as late rice in the late indica rice cropping region of South China. At present, the cumulative promoted area has reached about 5 million mu, creating economic benefits of 1.34 billion yuan, and it has become the main planted variety of late rice in South China. It is expected that by the end of the "Ninth Five-Year Plan" period, the cumulative promoted area will exceed 10 million mu.
Cultivation procedures:
The cultivation procedures for Boyou 210 are the same as the general field high-yield requirements, and in addition the following should be done:
1. Sow sparsely to raise strong seedlings, apply tillering fertilizer early, and promote early seedling growth and early tillering so as to increase the effective panicles per mu.
2. Do not apply nitrogen fertilizer in the middle growth stage; in the later stage, apply an appropriate amount of tail-strengthening fertilizer according to the growth of the rice plants and the soil fertility of the field.
3. In the later stage, it is not suitable to cut off water too early; keep the soil moist or alternately dry and wet. Because Boyou 210 has many green leaves in the later stage and high transpiration, moisture is beneficial for increasing grain weight and preventing early senescence; this variety is relatively susceptible to sclerotial stem rot, and moist soil can prevent the harm of this disease.
