What livestock and poultry diseases can honeysuckle (Japanese honeysuckle, Lonicera japonica) and common selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) treat?
Honeysuckle and common selfheal have the functions of clearing heat and detoxifying, clearing the liver and reducing internal heat, and dispelling wind and unblocking collaterals, and they have a strong inhibitory effect on bacilli and some viruses. Used alone or in combination, they can treat a variety of livestock and poultry diseases.
1. Rabbit heatstroke
10-15 g each of honeysuckle, common selfheal and Jinji grass, decocted in water and given orally.
2. Piglet white scour
100 g honeysuckle added to 1000 mL water, decocted down to 500 mL, mix the liquid together with the residue into the feed and feed it to the sow. Feed once each morning and evening, for 2 consecutive days; the cure rate reaches over 98%.
3. Pig eye opacity
The affected pig has millet-grain-sized foreign bodies on the cornea, which stimulate the nerves and cause pain. The affected pig is restless, sheds tears, and constantly rubs its head against the pen wall. Take fresh common selfheal, mash it, filter it, and use the juice to apply to the eyes several times a day; cured in 3 days.
4. Treating conjunctivitis and keratitis in pigs, cattle and sheep
The affected livestock has photophobia, tearing, red and swollen conjunctiva, mucous secretions, cloudy cornea, and obvious surrounding hyperemia. Take 30 g fresh common selfheal and 20 g borneol, mash and filter to obtain juice, and use the filtrate to apply to the eyes, twice daily; cured in 2 days.
5. Stunted pigs
40 g honeysuckle; 30 g each of Chinese tamarisk (Tamarix chinensis), gardenia fruit, common rush pith, Poria cocos (Poria), dyers woad leaf (Isatis indigotica leaf), common selfheal and wild schizonepeta; 20 g each of heartleaf houttuynia (Houttuynia cordata), yellow flower and Daoshui lotus; decoct in water, remove the residue, take the juice and mix it into the feed for oral feeding, 2-3 doses per pig.
6. Cattle eyelid ectropion
The affected cow's eyelids are highly swollen and everted, accompanied by keratitis. Take 50 g fresh common selfheal, 10 g borneol, and 1 soft-shelled crab that has just molted, mash them together, add water and filter, and use the filtrate to wash the affected cow's eyes, 3 times daily; cured in 3 days.
7. Chicken infectious bursal disease
20 g each of honeysuckle, common selfheal, Lysimachia christinae (moneywort), plantain seed, radish seed, chrysanthemum, Hypericum japonicum, Agastache rugosa (patchouli) and Scutellaria baicalensis (skullcap) (the dosage for 50 chickens for 1 day), decoct in water, remove the residue and administer orally, once daily for 3 consecutive days.
8. Duck plague
100 g honeysuckle; 150 g each of Phellodendron amurense (Amur cork tree bark), Saposhnikovia divaricata (divaricate saposhnikovia root), gypsum and gambir vine (Uncaria rhynchophylla); add 5 kg water and decoct together. Each dose is decocted twice, and 1 dose is given orally in 2-3 divided portions, 1 dose daily (the above is the dosage for 200 ducks for 1 day).
9. Goose influenza
35 g each of honeysuckle, akebia stem (Akebia quinata), tangerine peel, mint, Atractylodes lancea (lanceolate atractylodes rhizome) and schizonepeta; 25 g each of purple perilla, ephedra and cassia twig; decoct together to obtain juice. 1 dose is given orally in 2-3 divided portions, 1 dose daily, for 2-3 consecutive doses (the above is the dosage for 50 geese for 1 day).
