Introduction to the Polyploid Giant Odorless Garlic Variety
This variety is a polyploid transgenic giant garlic developed by transferring genes from Welsh onion and bitter melon into ordinary garlic. Its bulbs weigh 250-600 g each, with the largest reaching 900 g. Its garlic sprouts grow 60-160 cm tall, with leaves 35 cm long and 8 cm wide, and 8 leaves. Per mu (1 mu = 667 sq m, the same below), it yields more than 2,000 kg of bulbs and more than 300 kg of garlic scapes, with a single scape weighing 50 g. It can be grown as seed for many consecutive years without degeneration, and it has also successfully eliminated the unpleasant bad breath that ordinary garlic causes after eating. According to appraisal by the relevant state authorities, this giant odorless garlic can lower blood pressure, resist aging, and has a beauty-enhancing effect; it can also strengthen the stomach, treat diabetes, and when eaten regularly can prevent cancer and has a curative effect on early-stage cancer. In 1998, at the Beijing Beidaihe agriculture @#@119@#@, foreign merchants from Western Europe and elsewhere were willing to introduce garlic seed from our country at the expensive price of 16 US dollars per bulb. In the autumn of 1999, Japanese merchants requested supply, offering as much as 2,000 Japanese yen per kg. Experts believe that this garlic will certainly become popular worldwide in the future.
Cultivation Points: Any soil and region where ordinary garlic can be grown is suitable for growing this garlic, but for high-yield cultivation, fertile soil with good drainage should be selected. Prepare about 3 cubic meters of high-quality farmyard manure and 100-150 kg of compound fertilizer per mu, spread them evenly on the soil surface, then plow and turn the soil. Topdressing should be done once each in December of the same year and March of the following year, applying 5-10 kg of urea each time. Sow from mid-September to early October, with row and plant spacing of 40 cm x 30 cm, planting about 6,000 plants per mu. After emergence, loosen the soil and weed promptly. During the spring garlic growing period, early scape stage, and late scape stage, spray 1 g of "Fengchanling" plus 10 g of "Tuber Swelling Agent" mixed with 30-40 kg of water, for a total of 3-4 sprays, which can increase the weight of individual garlic bulbs and raise yield. Other management is the same as for ordinary garlic. After harvesting, do not expose the garlic to the sun; dry it in the shade in a cool room.
Precautions: This garlic has few cloves. Although each bulb weighs as much as 250-500 g, it has only about 5 cloves, each 50-100 g. Therefore, its propagation speed is not fast, so it is not suitable for growing as garlic sprouts. In addition, because it was developed by genetic modification, scapes cannot be left to produce seed (to prevent pollen mixing and variation); it can only be propagated by garlic cloves.
