Introduction to the Characteristics and Traits of the Chugeng 17 Rice Variety
Chugeng 17 is a new medium-maturing conventional medium japonica rice variety bred by the Chuxiong Prefecture Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Yunnan through crossing Chujing 8 / 25-3-1.
Characteristics and traits: the whole growth period of this variety is 170-175 days, plant height 95-100 cm, compact plant type, erect flag leaves, thick and strong stems, medium tillering ability, effective panicles per mu 280,000-300,000, relatively high panicle-forming rate, medium-to-large panicle type, grains per panicle 120-150, seed-setting rate 80%-85%, 1000-grain weight 26-28 g, yellow husk, colorless and awnless glume tip, white rice, moderate shattering, and good high and stable yield.
Chugeng 17 has good grain quality. According to testing by the Grain Chemistry Department of the China National Rice Research Institute, the brown rice rate is 85.1%, milled rice rate 77.2%, head rice rate 74.9%, gel consistency 80 mm, gelatinization temperature grade 7.0, amylose content 19.2%, protein content 8.0%, chalkiness rate 98%, chalkiness degree 23.8%, transparency grade 4, grain length 5.0 mm, length-to-width ratio 1.6; the first seven indicators all reach the ministry-issued first-grade japonica rice standard. According to identification of blast resistance against physiological races of rice blast by the Plant Protection Department of Yunnan Agricultural University, it is resistant to the four race groups Al, D1, El, and G1 of rice blast, and moderately resistant to the three race groups B13, C13, and F1; in regional trials and large-scale production applications it has shown resistance to rice blast. This variety participated in the Yunnan provincial regional trial in 1995-1996, with an average yield of 650 kg per mu, ranking first among the tested varieties, and increasing rice yield by 56 kg per mu compared with the control variety Hexi 24, an increase of 9.43%, reaching an extremely significant level.
Breeder: Chuxiong Prefecture Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Yunnan
Region and technology: Chujing 17 is suitable for promotion and planting in the mid-altitude rice areas of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at 1500-1850 m. At present, the promoted area has reached 870,000 mu, increasing rice yield by 70 million kg, and it is expected that 1 million mu can be promoted in the last two years of the "Ninth Five-Year Plan".
Cultivation procedures:
1. Sow at the right time and cultivate strong seedlings. Generally sow from March 15 to March 20, and transplant in early to mid-May. Sow 20-25 kg per mu. This variety has medium to weak tillering ability, so strong seedlings with 2-3 large tillers should be cultivated to lay the foundation for healthy plants and large panicles. At the same time, appropriately increase the basic seedlings and raise the panicle-forming rate.
2. Apply sufficient basal fertilizer and apply panicle fertilizer as appropriate. Apply 10-12 kg of pure nitrogen per mu, with 70%-80% of the total pure nitrogen used as basal fertilizer and tillering fertilizer to promote early and rapid tillering and lay the foundation for large panicles and a higher panicle-forming rate. Apply an appropriate amount of panicle-grain fertilizer, and increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, so as to nourish roots and preserve leaves and improve the seed-setting rate and grain weight.
3. Timely control of rice planthoppers during the seedling field period. Chugeng 17 has dark green leaves and is susceptible to damage by rice planthoppers and thus to infection with stripe dwarf disease. From 10 days after film removal to 7 days before transplanting, control of rice planthoppers should be strengthened.
4. Strengthen fertilizer and water management to prevent lodging. Because this variety has slightly longer internodes and large panicles, high-yield fields are prone to lodging in the later stage. After sufficient seedlings, the field should be sun-dried in a timely manner to control internode elongation and enhance lodging resistance.
