Chuanfeng 2 (formerly Gangyou 364) (rice)
Breeding units: Sichuan Provincial Seed Station, Sichuan Chuanfeng Seed Industry Breeding Center, Sichuan Jiangyou City Seed Company.
Approval status: approved by the Sichuan Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee in 1999, and by the National Crop Variety Approval Committee in 2000.
Variety approval number: Guoshendao 20000001.
Variety source: Gang 46A X Jianghui 364.
Characteristics: a medium-indica late-maturing hybrid rice variety. Moderate plant type, plant height 117.7 cm, stiff and thick culms, tolerant of fertilizer, strong lodging resistance, relatively weak tillering ability, high panicle-setting rate, leaves broad and thick, slightly rolled inward and erect, dark green leaf color, leaf sheath and glume tip purple. Large panicles, many grains, heavy panicles, 168,000 effective panicles per mu, panicle length 25.2 cm. Total grains per panicle 164.9, seed-setting rate 80.7%, 1000-grain weight 26.85 g. Grains yellow, awnless. Brown rice rate 78%, milled rice rate 69.4%, head rice rate 53.2%, grain length 6.0 mm, length-to-width ratio 2.4, chalkiness rate 78%, chalkiness degree 5.4%, transparency grade 3, gelatinization temperature grade 4.8, gel consistency 50 mm, amylose content 21.9%. Whole growth period 148 days, 2 days later maturing than the control Shanyou 63. Good yielding ability, high yield, ordinary rice quality, susceptible to bacterial leaf blight and rice blast. In 1998 it was entered in the southern rice region regional trial, with an average yield of 554.26 kg per mu, 7.2% higher than the control Shanyou 63; in 1999 it was continued in the trial, with an average yield of 610.29 kg per mu, 4.36% higher than the control Shanyou 63; in 1999 in the production test, the average yield was 579.7 kg per mu, 3.53% higher than the control Shanyou 63.
Cultivation points: transplant at the appropriate age, with a transplanting seedling age of 45-50 days. During seedling raising, thin and uniform sowing is required; it is best to use 5 cm X 8.3 cm spaced sowing of long-sprouted grain, and at the three-leaf-one-heart stage, spray the seedlings with 50 g of 15% paclobutrazol mixed with 25 kg of water, so as to cultivate short, sturdy, multi-tillering strong seedlings. Cultivation with relatively high fertilizer and water levels is suitable; generally, for fertile paddy fields the nitrogen application rate should be no less than 11 kg. The nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium ratio is best at 1:0.5:0.7. Generally, basal fertilizer accounts for 60%, seedling fertilizer 20%, and panicle fertilizer 20%. Appropriately sparse planting, at 26.4 cm X 16.5 cm or 30 cm X 16.5 cm, with the basic seedlings per mu required to reach 100,000-120,000 seedlings. About 20 days after transplanting, drain the field in time; light drying without cracking is suitable, and it is best to continuously use alternating dry and wet moist irrigation. Timely control of diseases and insect pests such as sheath blight, locusts, rice blast, and rice skipper. In Jiangyou City, Sichuan, the usual sowing date for the male parent is March 25, and for the female parent April 10-12; Jianghui 364 is about 5-10 cm taller than Minghui 63, so when spraying "920" the amount should be correspondingly reduced, generally about 16 g per mu is suitable; Gang 46A has the characteristic of sprouting on the panicle, so to ensure full seedlings, the seed rate should be increased, and seeds should be cleaned before sowing, with soaking time best controlled within 48 hours, and sprouting promoted at suitable temperature; other technical measures are similar to those for Shanyou 63.
Suitable range: to be planted as a single-season medium rice in the Yangtze River basin and the southwestern rice region in areas where bacterial leaf blight and rice blast occur lightly.
