Detailed Introduction to the Chunjiang 03 Geng Rice Variety
Chunjiang 03 Geng is a new japonica rice variety bred by the China National Rice Research Institute through hybridization with Xiushui 11 as the female parent and T82-25 as the male parent.
Yield performance: in the 1994 and 1995 Hubei provincial regional trials, Chunjiang 03 Geng had an average yield of 435.64 kg per mu, ranking first, an increase of 9.74% over the control Eyi 105, a highly significant increase; in the 1994-1996 late rice variety comparison trials in Xiaogan City and district, the 5-point average yield was 468.51 kg per mu, ranking first, an increase of 16.66% over Eyi 105 (CK1) and 15.01% over Bing 664 (CK2), both reaching highly significant levels. In 1995, more than 200 mu were planted for demonstration in Xiaogan, with an average yield of 461.4 kg per mu; in 1996 the demonstration was expanded to more than 10000 mu, with a general yield of about 450 kg per mu, an increase of 50-100 kg over other varieties in production.
Characteristics: Chunjiang 03 Geng has vigorous growth, strong tillering ability, a high ear-bearing rate, a compact plant type, tolerance to fertilizer and resistance to lodging, cold tolerance in the late stage, good color conversion at maturity, and easy threshing. Plant height is about 85 cm, effective ears per mu about 300,000, about 70 grains per ear, seed setting rate 85%-90%, 1000-grain weight 28-29 g, comprehensive rice score 57 points, reaching the Ministry-issued first-grade rice standard, with good eating quality. The full heading stage is 1-3 days later than that of Eyi 105 sown and transplanted at the same time, and the whole growth period is 3-5 days longer. It is resistant to rice blast; in the leaf-cutting inoculation test at the booting stage, it is moderately resistant to highly resistant to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae strains KS-6-6 and Zhe 173; sheath blight and rice false smut are mild.

Regions and techniques: 1. Sow at the right time and cultivate strong seedlings: for cultivation as double-season late rice, sowing from June 15-20 is appropriate, with a seeding rate of 30-35 kg per mu in the seedling field and 5-6 kg of seed per mu in the main field; apply paclobutrazol at the one-leaf-one-heart stage to strengthen seedlings and promote tillering. 2. Properly dense planting, focusing on more ears: transplant 30,000 hills per mu in the main field, with 4-5 seedlings per hill. 3. Apply heavy basal fertilizer and supplementary grain fertilizer: generally apply 60-70 kg of ammonium bicarbonate, 20-30 kg of phosphate fertilizer, and 7.5-10 kg of potassium chloride per mu as basal fertilizer, and apply 2-3 kg of urea as supplementary fertilizer after full heading. Other management is the same as for high-yield cultivation of general double-season late japonica rice.
