Detailed Introduction to Fengsuan No.1, a New Dual-Purpose Garlic Variety

    “Fengsuan No.1” garlic has characteristics such as early maturity, vigorous growth, cold tolerance, disease resistance, early bolting, large bulbs, high yield and good quality. It is an ideal variety for autumn planting of dual-purpose (bolt and bulb) garlic in the Huang-Huai River basin. The plant height is 60-70 cm, the pseudostem height is about 25 cm, and the pseudostem diameter is 1.5-2 cm; each plant has 80-100 fibrous roots, 20-48 cm long and 0.07-0.18 cm thick, with about 2/3 of the fibrous roots branching; the whole growth period has 12-14 leaves, and 6-7 leaves at overwintering. The garlic bolt is 60-80 cm long, with a red spathe, a tail 20-30 cm long and 0.42-0.63 cm thick, and a single bolt weighs 23-30 g; it bolts easily and is crisp, tender and good in taste. The outer skin of the bulb has a slight purple-striped mottling, the transverse diameter is 5.3-7.2 cm, bulbs with a transverse diameter greater than 5 cm account for more than 85%, a single bulb has a dry weight of 50-80.2 g, with the heaviest reaching more than 360 g, and each bulb has 8-10 cloves. The whole growth period is about 215 days, and the suitable sowing time in the Xuhuai area is generally September 20-30.
