Applying microbial fertilizer to garlic at the seedling stage gives remarkable results
Jinxiang County in Shandong Province is the nationally famous "hometown of garlic." In Jinxiang, the year-round garlic planting area exceeds 33,000 hectares, ranking first among all counties (cities) and districts in China, and it is known as the "Chinese garlic capital." Thanks to the superior local natural conditions, the average garlic yield per 667 sq m reaches more than 1,200 kg, with the highest reaching 3,000 kg. Jinxiang garlic accounts for 70% of China's total garlic exports, and there is a saying that "to see the world's garlic, look to China; to see China's garlic, look to Jinxiang." The people of Jinxiang have also escaped poverty and gone on to live prosperous lives by growing garlic.
As garlic cultivation techniques have improved and garlic yields have increased, garlic farmers commonly apply chemical fertilizers blindly and apply little or no organic fertilizer, causing soil fertility to decline and the soil to become compacted. Years of continuous garlic cultivation have also caused soil-borne diseases and insect pests in the soil to increase year by year. This has raised garlic farmers' cultivation costs year by year and has also affected their cultivation income.
A trial in which garlic was treated with the organic fertilizer product containing microbial fertilizer, "Baihuashan" brand multi-resistant bio-organic fertilizer, showed that in 2006, because the garlic in that field was sown early and the temperature was rather high, the emergence period was prolonged, causing the garlic seedlings to be weak, with poorly developed root systems, rotted root bases, rust-yellow roots, few new roots, and 2 to 3 leaves above ground rotting and turning yellow. In the plots treated with the multi-resistant bio-organic fertilizer, however, the seedlings were sturdy and vigorous, with well-developed root systems and fewer diseases, showing clear differences compared with the control. The trial will continue with detailed investigations of each growth stage of the garlic to sum up experience and promote the growing of garlic in Jinxiang year after year, with a bumper harvest in every crop.
