The variety II You 98 (formerly named Kang You 98) of this application is an indica hybrid rice, belonging to the common cultivated rice species of the genus Oryza (Oryza sativa L.) in plant taxonomy. II You 98 was developed by crossing Taichung Native 1 (TN1) as the female parent with DV85 as the male parent to breed an intermediate resistance source TD whose main economic traits were improved but which still carries the Xa-7 gene; then TD was used as the female parent and Minghui 63 as the male parent for crossing and recurrent backcrossing, breeding a restorer line Kanghui 98 whose traits resemble those of Minghui 63 but which has good restoration ability and strong combining ability, and whose F1 test-crossed with II-32A has high resistance to bacterial blight; finally, II-32A was used as the female parent and Kanghui 98 as the male parent to produce II You 98 hybrid seeds for production use.

Characteristics and traits: II You 98 has a medium to high number of leaves on the main stem, long panicle length, fairly good to good panicle exsertion, an intermediate panicle type, clustered secondary branches, a drooping panicle attitude, medium to high viability of latent buds on the culm, sparse glume pubescence, short longest awn length, yellow glume color, purple apiculus color, many grains per panicle, high to extremely high seed setting rate, and medium shattering habit; medium sterile lemma length, and straw-yellow sterile lemma color; medium to long grain length, medium to wide grain width, oval grain shape, and high 1000-grain weight; medium brown rice length, medium brown rice width, spindle-shaped brown rice, and white seed coat. Compared with the control variety Shanyou 63, its specificity lies in: II You 98 has long flag leaf length, medium to wide flag leaf width, and an erect flag leaf angle; Shanyou 63 has medium flag leaf length, medium flag leaf width, and an intermediate flag leaf angle; II You 98 has clustered secondary branches, while Shanyou 63 has many secondary branches.
