Scientific Potassium Application for High Yield and Quality in Garlic
Potassium is an essential nutrient for crop growth, and its role in increasing crop yields and improving the quality of agricultural products has been confirmed in many crops, but there are still few reports on the effect of potassium on garlic yield and quality. Through two years of field trials, the Soil and Fertilizer Institute of the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences proved that potassium application to garlic achieves high yield and quality.
1. The role of potassium application in garlic. The results of two years of field trials showed that potassium fertilizer application to garlic had an obvious yield-increasing effect. Under equal nitrogen and phosphorus levels, applying potassium fertilizer compared with no potassium fertilizer increased yield by 60.0-237.3 kg per mu, with a yield increase rate of 17.3%-47.4%; applying 1 kg of potassium oxide increased garlic bulb yield by 4.67-23.7 kg. The benefit of applying potassium fertilizer per mu was 157.0-688.9 yuan, and the output-to-input ratio was 1:6.1-30.9. The size of the potassium fertilizer effect is related to the nitrogen-to-potassium ratio. When the nitrogen-to-potassium ratio is 1:0.5-1.0, the yield-increasing effect is greatest. At the level of 20 kg of nitrogen per mu, matching with 10 kg of potassium oxide gives relatively good benefits; under the condition of 30 kg of nitrogen per mu, applying an additional 20 kg of potassium oxide gives a relatively high yield increase rate.
2. Effect of potassium application on garlic quality. Increasing potassium fertilizer application can improve the appearance quality of garlic, increase single bulb weight, and enhance the market competitiveness of garlic; the total amount of soluble carbohydrates and amino acids in garlic bulbs increases; the content of the dominant amino acid arginine increases from 4.6% to 5.31%, and the nutritional quality of garlic is significantly improved.
3. Suitable application rate of potassium fertilizer. Under the condition of applying 20-30 kg of nitrogen per mu, applying 10-20 kg of potassium oxide per mu is appropriate.
