Gastrodia elata Cultivation Prospects Analysis and Key Cultivation Techniques
In recent years, due to the recovery of the Gastrodia elata market and prices, combined with exaggerated or false advertising, the artificial cultivation of Gastrodia elata has been hyped up extensively, causing its value to multiply.
Gastrodia elata is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Orchidaceae family, and its growth and development require specific environmental conditions and material foundations. First, Gastrodia elata is a typical heterotrophic higher plant, and its growth and development must rely on Armillaria mellea as its "food source." Without Armillaria mellea providing "nutrition," the Gastrodia elata corm will shrink from starvation and die out within 2-3 years. Therefore, the prerequisite for artificially cultivating Gastrodia elata is to first cultivate good Armillaria mellea spawn and inoculated wood. Without Armillaria mellea, how can one even talk about growing Gastrodia elata? Second, it has relatively strict requirements for natural climate and terrain conditions. Wild Gastrodia elata is distributed within the range of 24-45 degrees north latitude and 94-142 degrees east longitude. China's main Gastrodia elata producing areas are in parts of the high mountain zones of Yunnan, Sichuan, Jilin, Guizhou, Shaanxi, Hubei, Xizang, Liaoning, Jiangxi, Anhui, Heilongjiang, Hebei, Taiwan, China and other provinces and regions. The vertical distribution of wild Gastrodia elata is closely related to local climate conditions. For example, wild Gastrodia elata in provinces such as Hubei and Yunnan is mostly distributed in high mountain areas at altitudes of 1300-1900 m, in Sichuan Province it is mostly distributed at 1200-2500 m, in Liaoning Province it is mostly distributed at 200-400 m, and in Shaanxi Province it is mostly distributed at 800-1000 m. The climate characteristics of these areas are no extreme heat in summer, no extreme cold in winter, rainy summers, and humid, cool air; in the north and high-cold mountain areas, winter snow cover is thicker and coverage is greater, annual precipitation is above 1000 mm, relative air humidity is 70%-80%, annual average temperature is 3-13°C, monthly average maximum temperature is 24-29°C, and monthly average minimum temperature is 1.3 to -1.6°C. The suitable temperature for the growth of Gastrodia elata and Armillaria mellea is 15-25°C. If the natural summer temperature exceeds 30°C for one consecutive week, the Gastrodia elata corm will rot due to high temperature, causing reduced yield or no harvest. Therefore, in southern and low-altitude plain and hilly areas, without modern cooling equipment, it is not suitable to cultivate Gastrodia elata. Even if one wants to grow it, it must be grown in Gastrodia elata producing areas to be reliable.
The production cycle of Gastrodia elata is relatively long. From cultivating Armillaria mellea spawn and inoculated wood to sowing the Gastrodia elata seed and harvesting, it generally takes more than 1 year. Where conditions are met and the climate is suitable, Gastrodia elata production can be developed on a large scale as a project for adjusting the agricultural planting structure; otherwise, this "Gastrodia elata fever" phenomenon should be treated cautiously, and one must never violate natural laws by blindly introducing projects, leading to the tragedy of making things worse.
