What are the key management techniques for garlic during the green-up stage?
How should garlic be managed during the green-up stage? After garlic overwinters, it enters the green-up stage. According to the climate characteristics of the Cangshan garlic producing area, after mid-February, temperatures gradually rise and the garlic plants begin active growth. After the Spring Equinox, that is, in late March, the seed garlic cloves rot (also called "clove rot" or "mother clove depletion"), the plants grow new adventitious roots, and growth begins to accelerate. In terms of management, soil temperature should be raised, along with fertilizer and water, to promote faster plant growth. For garlic fields covered with horse manure or firewood and straw in winter, the fertilizer or straw should be cleared away and the ground left to dry for 2-3 days. This can raise the soil temperature and promote root growth. To make field management convenient, while clearing the fertilizer and straw, the ridges of the garlic beds should be reshaped once. After the bed ridges are tidied, topdressing can be carried out. For topdressing at this stage, generally 1000-1500 kg of thoroughly decomposed, finely crushed high-quality barnyard manure per mu, or 15-20 kg of ammonium sulfate, can be applied. Dig furrows between the garlic plants, spread the fertilizer, and cover with soil. To allow the fertilizer to be absorbed and used as quickly as possible and to give full play to its effectiveness, watering should be done immediately after fertilizing. During the green-up stage, the soil temperature is still relatively low, so for a period after fertilizing and watering, the work of hoeing and loosening the soil must not be neglected. Generally, 1-2 rounds of intertillage and soil loosening are needed.
