Introduction to the High-Starch Sweet Potato Variety Shuangwan No. 1
Shuangwan No. 1 is a new sweet potato variety, newly bred by the Sweet Potato Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This variety has stable genetics and does not degenerate over successive years of propagation; it is a new high-starch sweet potato variety.
1. Characteristics: leaves and stems are green, leaves are heart-shaped with serrated edges, vine length is 1-1.5 m, tubers set early and concentrated, tuber shape is long cylindrical, attractive and good-tasting, tuber skin is deep purplish-red, smooth and attractive, tuber flesh is pure white and attractive, strong sprouting ability, strong tuber-setting ability, high rate of large tubers, moderate tuber size, good uniformity, drying rate 37%-39%, starch content 24%-28%, high-quality starch. Spring-planted sweet potatoes set 5-8 tubers per plant, with a single-plant weight of 1.5-3 kg; summer-planted ones set 6-12 tubers per plant, with a single-plant weight of 1-2 kg. Spring-planted sweet potatoes yield 4000-9000 kg per mu, and summer-planted ones yield 3000-5000 kg per mu. Tolerant to fertilizer, tolerant to poor soil, tolerant to storage, and highly resistant to the 3 major sweet potato diseases.
2. Cultivation points: Spring planting from March 15 to around April 15. Summer planting from May 15 to around June 15. Plant spacing 30-40 cm, row spacing 70 cm; ridge planting and transplanting are better. Deep plow about 40 cm, apply 3000-4000 kg of high-quality farmyard manure per mu, 100 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer or potassium sulfate, with 50 kg applied as base fertilizer, and apply 50 kg of crack fertilizer as a top dressing during the tuber bulking stage. During the tuber bulking stage, spray sweet potato tuber bulking hormone 1-2 times every 15 days. If vigorous growth occurs during cloudy and rainy weather, promptly spray chlormequat for chemical control. For other planting techniques, refer to local sweet potato variety cultivation practices.
