Symptoms, Identification, and Control Methods of Leek Anthracnose
Anthracnose is an important disease of leek, widely distributed and commonly occurring. It usually occurs very mildly, with no obvious impact on production; only in individual plots or when there is more rain during the growing period does the disease become severe, with 100% of plants infected, and some leaves dying from the disease, significantly affecting yield and quality.
[Symptoms] This disease mainly infects leaves and leaf sheaths. Initially, small white spots appear on the surface of leaves or leaf sheaths, which later develop into nearly oval to long spindle-shaped or irregular white necrotic dead spots, with a distinct boundary between diseased and healthy tissue. Finally, black dots, namely acervuli, appear on the surface of the lesions. When the disease is severe, lesions on the leaves are densely distributed, connecting with each other into patches, causing the leaves to die within a short period.
[Disease Development] The pathogen overwinters in the soil as stromata or acervuli, or as mycelium with diseased plant residues. When conditions are suitable, the acervuli produce conidia to cause infection. After the disease occurs, it spreads via rain splash and watering. The pathogen develops at temperatures of 4-34°C, with an optimum temperature of around 20°C, and 20-26°C being suitable for spore germination. During the growing period, with temperatures of 10-32°C and humid air, the disease can occur, with 26°C being the most favorable for disease development. During the production period, if there is frequent rain or poor field drainage, the disease occurs severely.
[Control Methods] 1. After harvest, thoroughly remove diseased plant residues and plow the land in a timely manner to reduce overwintering pathogens. 2. Implement a crop rotation of more than 2 years with non-onion and non-garlic crops. 3. Apply chemical control in the early stage of the disease. Options include spraying or drenching the roots with 25% Sportak wettable powder at 800 times dilution, or 25% Tanteling wettable powder at 500 times dilution, or 70% Thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 600 times dilution, or 40% Duoliu suspension concentrate at 500 times dilution, or 2% Nongkang 120 aqueous solution at 200 times dilution.
