Super hybrid japonica rice successfully bred in Tianjin

In the golden autumn season, the thousand-mu rice fields at the Ninghe Rice Original Seed Farm are a sea of gold, and the super hybrid japonica rice planted here - the high-quality Xiaozhan hybrid japonica rice - has been successfully harvested. This marks major progress in the Tianjin major science and technology project led by Academician Yuan Longping - "Research on New Combinations of High-Quality, Super-High-Yield Xiaozhan Rice." Based on analysis of the number of grains per rice ear and other factors, rice experts expect the yield per mu to reach 800 kg, an increase of more than 150 kg over conventional rice yields, with greatly improved quality.

According to reports, the conventional rice varieties currently planted in North China mostly yield about 650 kg per mu, and there is an urgent need to introduce high-yield, high-quality varieties. The city's major science and technology project led by Academician Yuan Longping - "Research on New Combinations of High-Quality, Super-High-Yield Xiaozhan Rice" - has, through the use of modern high-tech biological breeding methods, achieved a major breakthrough in raising hybrid japonica rice yields, gradually realizing the use of limited arable land to produce more grain and increase farmers' incomes. The successful planting of super hybrid japonica rice this year will create favorable conditions for large-scale promotion of this variety next year in the city and throughout North China. To advance super rice planting, relevant municipal departments have also listed the "High-Quality, High-Yield, Stress-Resistant, Broadly Adapted Hybrid Japonica Rice Improved Seed Industrialization Project" as a priority. At present, they are actively building a 10,000-mu hybrid japonica rice central production base and establishing 14,000 mu of seed propagation fields under a company-plus-farmer model; establishing an enterprise R&D center and marketing center, among other things. The total project investment is 61.86 million yuan, with a construction period of 2 years. After the project is completed, it can form an annual production capacity of 5 million kg of hybrid japonica rice seed, and at the same time can promote the planting of 2.5 million mu of new hybrid japonica rice varieties.

It is also reported that the "10 You 18" Tianjin-produced super hybrid rice, bred by the Tianjin hybrid rice scientific research expert group led by national-level hybrid rice breeding expert Liu Xuejun, has recently been successfully bred at the breeding base in Tanghai County, Hebei Province. The yield and intrinsic quality of the bred variety are both first-class domestically. The average yield of "10 You 18" has reached more than 800 kg per mu, and farmers can increase their income by more than 150 yuan per mu.
