On the 18th, the reporter learned from the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences that agricultural scientists in Shanghai have made a breakthrough in hybrid japonica rice breeding in the Yangtze River Basin. Following the acquisition of the first hybrid late japonica rice restorer line in the Yangtze River Basin to obtain national plant variety protection rights, the first southern hybrid late japonica rice combination to pass national variety approval has also been bred. At present, a series of strongly heterotic combinations have become an important support for the "seed source" of hybrid japonica rice in the Yangtze River Basin.

Researchers from the Crop Breeding Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences used intermediate materials between indica and japonica subspecies as "bridge parents" to introduce indica rice restorer genes into late japonica rice varieties, successfully breeding hybrid late japonica restorer lines with strong heterosis, high seed-setting rates and large pollen amounts that can be applied on a large scale in the Yangtze River Basin. Among them, "Shenhui 254" is the first hybrid late japonica restorer line in the Yangtze River Basin to obtain national plant variety protection rights; the restoring ability of "Shenhui No. 1" reaches more than 95 percent, making it one of the late japonica restorer lines with the strongest restoring ability at present.

Using strong restorer lines as parents for extensive combination crossing, researchers at the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences have bred 8 hybrid japonica rice combinations, of which 4 combinations have passed variety approval at or above the provincial and municipal levels. "Changyou No. 1" is the first southern hybrid late japonica rice combination in China to pass national variety approval. At present, these superior combinations have been promoted cumulatively over more than 1.35 million mu, with cumulative increased production of more than 56 million kg of high-quality rice grain. The hybrid combinations crossed with "Shenhui No. 1" have a stable seed-setting rate of more than 90 percent, with an average yield of about 650 kg per mu, saving labor and cost; their resistance and tolerance to pests and diseases are obvious; the rice quality is relatively good, reaching Grade 3 national rice standards or above.

According to sources from the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, hybrid combinations bred with the strongly heterotic restorer lines developed this time as parents will become the "main promoted varieties" of hybrid late japonica rice in the Yangtze River Basin in the future. Optimistically estimated, they can account for more than 60 percent of the promotion area of hybrid late japonica rice in the Yangtze River Basin, can promote a substantial increase in rice yield and improvement in quality within the region, and play a role in agricultural structural adjustment.
