Super-high-yield new hybrid japonica rice variety Qiuyou Jinfeng successfully bred
The super-high-yield new hybrid japonica rice variety "Qiuyou Jinfeng", independently bred by Shanghai scientists, after 3 years of production demonstration planting, reached a per-mu yield of 801.9 kg, and has recently passed expert acceptance inspection.
On December 31, 2006, a reporter learned at the Shanghai Minhang District Agricultural Science Research Institute that the cultivation of the excellent variety "Qiuyou Jinfeng" uses the genetic differences between the two parents of indica rice and japonica rice, with an excellent late japonica sterile line as the female parent, and selects excellent indica rice and excellent japonica rice restorer lines as the male parent, through "indica-japonica bridging" technology, and is a new combination prepared by applying the two-line and three-line methods.
"Qiuyou Jinfeng" not only has large and well-filled panicles, thick and firm stems, and abundant, plump grains, but also, in the past 3 years of demonstration planting, has shown strong lodging resistance, disease resistance and insect resistance, and in particular has withstood the test of "rice planthoppers". Its taste is fragrant, light and soft, and its rice quality reaches the first-grade standard for high-quality rice issued by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Relevant experts from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission believe that hybrid japonica rice has great development space in the rice-growing areas of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Because hybrid japonica combinations have high yields and excellent rice quality, they are very popular when planted in Shanghai and surrounding areas. "Qiuyou Jinfeng" had produced more than 19,000 kg of seed in 2006, and about 10,000 mu can be planted in 2007. Demonstration areas will be established in 10 districts and counties of Shanghai to accelerate the promotion and development of the new combination.
