Hybrid late japonica rice restorer lines successfully bred in the Yangtze River Basin
Through the efforts of experts from the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the "Yangtze River Basin hybrid late japonica rice restorer lines - Shenhui 254 and Shenhui No. 1" were successfully bred and utilized. This project was awarded first prize for scientific and technological progress by the Shanghai Municipal Government this year.
The key to applying hybrid late japonica rice in production in the Yangtze River Basin is to breed excellent late japonica-type restorer lines. This project used intermediate materials between indica and japonica subspecies as bridge parents, introduced indica restorer genes into late japonica rice varieties, adopted convergent crossing and systematic selection, and gathered the excellent genes and restorer genes of multiple high-quality parents. Through
DNA fingerprint analysis and genetic distance measurement, the hybrid late japonica restorer lines Shenhui 254 and Shenhui No. 1, with strong heterosis, high quality, high seed-setting rate and large pollen quantity, were successfully bred for large-scale application in the Yangtze River Basin.
Using Shenhui No. 1 and Shenhui 254 as parents for extensive combination crossing, 8 hybrid japonica rice combinations have been bred, including Changyou No. 1, Shenyou 254, Shenyou No. 1, Shenyou 693, Shenyou No. 10, Huayou No. 1, Shenyou 254 and Pinyou 693. Among them, four combinations - Changyou No. 1, Shenyou 254, Shenyou No. 1 and Shenyou 693 - have passed provincial and municipal or higher variety approval. Changyou No. 1 is the first southern hybrid late japonica rice combination to pass national variety approval. Shenyou No. 10 participated in the 2005 Shanghai hybrid japonica rice regional trial, showing strong heterosis, high seed-setting rate and large panicles, and its yield ranked first among the combinations tested.
By 2005, hybrid japonica rice combinations bred with Shenhui 254 and Shenhui No. 1 as parents had been promoted over a cumulative area of more than 1.35 million mu, of which 1.1348 million mu were promoted during 2003-2005, with a cumulative increase in high-quality rice output of 56.74 million kg, newly added output value of 95.602 million yuan, and newly added profit of 22.696 million yuan, achieving extremely significant social and economic benefits. The hybrid japonica rice combinations bred with these two restorer lines as parents will become the main combinations of hybrid late japonica rice in the Yangtze River Basin in the coming years, accounting for more than 60% of the promoted area of hybrid late japonica rice in the Yangtze River Basin. The breeding of these two restorer lines has promoted a substantial increase in rice yield and improvement in quality in the region. The bred combinations with strong heterosis have become an important support for seed-source agriculture in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Basin, and play an important role in agricultural structural adjustment. At the same time, because the resistance of hybrid japonica rice is enhanced, the use of pesticides is reduced, costs are saved, environmental pollution is reduced, and the ecological environment is improved.
