Detailed Introduction to the Danjing 8 Upland Rice Variety
Variety origin: Danjing 8 was developed by the Dandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Liaoning Province through hybridization and selection in 1987. It was approved by the Liaoning Provincial Variety Approval Committee in 1999.
Characteristics and traits: When planted in upland fields in Liaoning Province, the growth period from emergence to maturity is about 130 d, requiring an active accumulated temperature of 2720°C; it is a medium-maturity variety. Plant height is around 95 cm, with thick and sturdy stems, relatively dark green leaves, relatively short leaf blades, and a relatively compact plant type. Tillering ability is relatively strong, the root system is well developed, and the stems remain green at maturity. The number of effective panicles is about 230,000 panicles/667 sq m, semi-compact panicle type, panicle length 15.7 cm, grains relatively densely arranged, average number of grains per panicle 90.3, seed-setting rate 95%, 1000-grain weight 25 g. Glume color yellow-white, grain oval-shaped, awnless. Drought tolerance and blast resistance are relatively strong; excessive fertilization at the later stage may lead to the occurrence of rice false smut.
Yield performance: From 1997 to 1998, the average yield in the Liaoning Province upland rice production trial was 425.9 kg/667 sq m, an increase of 24.4% over the control variety. This variety has great yield potential, with a general yield of about 400 kg/667 sq m.
Cultivation points: Select low-lying land, inter-montane seepage fields, or upland fields or paddy fields with certain irrigation conditions, relatively good water and fertilizer retention, moderately soft soil, and a pH value below 7.5. Land preparation must meet high standards, achieving level ground, fine soil, no visible or hidden clods, and no stubble. The sowing time in Liaoning Province is late April. The sowing rate is about 7.5 kg/667 sq m. The sowing method generally adopts flat planting in rows, with a row spacing of 30 cm; sow after opening furrows, with a furrow depth of 5 cm and a sowing width of 6 cm. The covering soil should not be too thick, and is required to be 2 cm. At sowing and when covering soil, it should be pressed (trodden) firm.
Suitable areas: Suitable for cultivation in single-season upland rice areas such as Liaoning Province and Hebei Province, and can also be planted in areas with similar ecological types. In Henan Province, Shandong Province, and other places, it can be trial-planted as wheat-stubble rice.
