Variety Approval Number: Guoshendao 2003030

Crop Type: Rice

Variety Name: Zhonghan 3

First Breeding Institution: China National Rice Research Institute

Variety Source: Systematic selection from CNA6187-3

Characteristics: This variety is a long-grain japonica conventional upland rice variety, with a growth period of 120-125 days, maturing 2-7 days later than the Brazilian upland rice IAPAR 9. Plant height is 130 cm, plant type is relatively compact, growth is luxuriant, and flag leaves are erect. Stems, leaves and husks are all smooth (glabrous), early growth is vigorous, leaf color is dark green, and later it shows yellow filaments and bright stems with good ripening appearance. Effective panicles per mu are 142,700, panicle length is 23.78 cm, average total grains per panicle is 129.56, average seed setting rate is 71.87%, and 1000-grain weight is 25.88 g. Resistance: leaf blast grade 0, panicle blast grade 0.5, drought resistance grade 3. Main rice quality indicators: head rice rate 47.8%, chalky grain rate 33%, chalkiness degree 9.9%, gel consistency 76 mm, amylose content 19.9%.

Yield Performance: In 2000, it participated in the national upland rice variety regional trial in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and South China, with an average yield of 248.33 kg per mu, 5.23% higher than the control IAPAR 9, reaching an extremely significant level, ranking first among the tested varieties; in 2001, in the continued trial, the average yield was 305.75 kg per mu, 11.83% higher than the control IAPAR 9, reaching an extremely significant level, ranking first among the tested varieties; in 2001, in production trials in Guangxi, Zhejiang and Hainan, the general yield was 310-410 kg per mu, 11.24-24.16% higher than the control IAPAR 9.

Key Cultivation Techniques: 1. Fine tillage. Land is required to be level, with drainage and irrigation ditches dug on the four sides and in the middle of the field so that it can both drain and irrigate; 2. Sowing. Use direct seeding, with row spacing of 33-40 cm; hill sowing may also be used, with row and hill spacing of (26-28)*(16-18) cm, sowing about 5 seeds per hill, and covering with soil to a depth of 3-5 cm; 3. Fertilization. Apply sufficient basal fertilizer; generally apply 20 dan of organic fertilizer, 40 kg of phosphate fertilizer, 10 kg of potassium fertilizer and 5 kg of urea per mu; when seedlings have 4 leaves, apply 8-10 kg of urea per mu, and at the tillering stage apply 10 kg of urea per mu as topdressing; 4. If drought occurs 1-2 days after sowing and at the tillering and booting stages, irrigate with an appropriate amount of water in a timely manner; 5. Weed control. For mountainous and wasteland areas, spray glyphosate or Roundup-type strong herbicides 15 days before land preparation to clear weeds; at sowing, upland rice-specific herbicides may be appropriately used to control weeds; 6. Control of diseases, insect pests and rodents. Focus on controlling underground pests such as mole crickets, and in the middle and late stages pay attention to controlling sheath blight, rice blast and damage by rats.

Approval Opinion of the National Variety Approval Committee: Upon review, this variety meets the national rice variety approval standards and has passed approval. This variety is a long-grain japonica conventional upland rice variety, with a growth period of 120-125 days, relatively strong drought resistance, and resistance to rice blast. It is suitable for planting as a single-season upland rice in Guangxi, Zhejiang and Hainan Provinces.
