Upland rice variety Taixuan No. 1 yields a steady 1,000 jin
Upland rice Taixuan No. 1 is a new upland rice line jointly bred by researchers from the Huang-Huai-Hai Upland Rice Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and the scientific and technical staff of Jinan Huinong Seed Industry Co., Ltd. in Shandong Province, through 4 consecutive years of careful selection from the upland rice variety Thailand Desert No. 3. Trials and demonstrations at demonstration bases in Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, Anhui and other provinces proved that its yield per mu reached 500 kg to 600 kg, with the highest yield per mu reaching more than 700 kg.
Characteristics
The whole growth period of Taixuan No. 1 is 100 days to 120 days, with thick and sturdy stems, strong tillering ability, a well-developed root system, fast grain filling, disease resistance and tolerance to poor soil, drought and waterlogging tolerance, large heads and large grains, and high and stable yield. After three years of comparative trials and demonstrations, it can increase yield by about 30% to 50% compared with the general upland rice varieties currently promoted in China (such as Beijing 277, Beijing 297 and Brazilian upland rice). Under the drought conditions of 1999, the 30 mu of Taixuan No. 1 upland rice planted by the Huang-Huai-Hai Upland Rice Research Center, with only one watering, had an average yield per mu of 597 kg, while the other five varieties had a yield per mu of only about 300 kg to 350 kg. In 2000, 200 mu were planted in a contiguous block in Jiyang, Shandong. According to yield measurement and acceptance by experts from the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the average yield per mu was 531.8 kg, and the highest yield per mu was 704.5 kg.
The grain is oval-shaped and is a waxy japonica rice, whose quality can rival that of high-quality paddy japonica rice.
Sowing time and method
For planting after wheat stubble in the Yellow River basin and parts of North China, sowing before June 15 is preferable, while spring sowing can be arranged in mid-to-late April. For sowing, two methods can be used: raising seedlings in advance for transplanting or direct seeding. The seeding rate is 7.5 kg per mu.
