Introduction to 2 sweet potato varieties, for growers' reference
1. Zheshu 13
Registration number: Zherenshu 2005002
Breeding unit: Institute of Crop and Nuclear Technology Utilization, Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences
Variety source: Zhe 3481 x Zhe 255
Yield performance: According to multi-year, multi-site trials, the average fresh tuber yield per mu is about 2500 kg, more than 10% higher than the control Xushu 18.
Characteristics: It is a mid-to-late maturing variety, with a whole growth period of about 135 days under open-field cultivation, and tends to bud and flower in autumn. Long vines, strong growth vigor, relatively large leaves, heart-shaped with toothed margins, dark green leaf color, purple-red veins, green stems and vines. About 2.7 tubers per plant, large and medium tuber rate 80.7%, marketable tubers short spindle-shaped at maturity; tuber skin purple-red, flesh orange-yellow; skin smooth, without longitudinal grooves, few surface root hairs, tubers attractive in appearance and good in marketability; floury mouthfeel, sweet taste, soluble sugar in fresh tubers 8.0%, dry matter rate of tubers 35.8%, starch extraction rate 21.96%; moderate resistance to black spot disease; tubers fairly good in storage tolerance, seed tubers sprout quickly, strong vigor at seedling stage; drought tolerant and tolerant of poor soil, excessive nitrogen fertilizer easily causes excessive vine growth.
Key cultivation techniques: This variety is suitable for seedling raising under protection in early March, and in open field in early April. For starch processing, it should be planted early at the proper time to increase starch content; for fresh eating and roasted sweet potato processing, it should be planted from late May to early June and harvested in mid-to-late October.
Registration opinion: This variety has high yield, high dry matter rate and starch extraction rate, excellent eating quality and processing performance, attractive tuber shape, and drought and poor-soil tolerance. It can be used as a variety for fresh eating, starch processing and roasted sweet potato processing, and is suitable for promotion and application across the province.
2. Sweet potato Jinyu (formerly named Zhe 1257)
Registration number: Zherenshu 2005001
Breeding unit: Institute of Crop and Nuclear Technology Utilization, Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences
Variety source: Zhe 73 Ban 2 x Sushu 2
Yield performance: According to multi-year, multi-site trial plantings, the average yield of marketable fresh tubers (below 180 g) per mu is about 1200 kg.
Characteristics: It is an early maturing variety, with a suitable harvest period for spring sweet potato (from planting to harvest) of about 130 days, and a suitable harvest period for summer-autumn sweet potato of about 110 days. Plant type prostrate, stems and leaves green, about 5 tubers per plant, high rate of small and medium tubers, tubers red-skinned and yellow-fleshed, skin thin and smooth, short spindle-shaped, good marketability; total soluble sugar 10.76%, crude fiber 0.93%; sweet and delicate mouthfeel, good palatability, good flavor, excellent quality.
Key cultivation techniques: This variety should be planted in fields with paddy-upland rotation or newly opened red-yellow soil, and planted early at the proper time; appropriately increase planting density, use horizontal cuttings, with 3-4 nodes inserted into the soil; apply less nitrogen fertilizer for autumn sweet potato to prevent excessive vine growth, and pay attention to the control of stem rot disease.
Registration opinion: This variety has good early maturity, excellent fresh-eating quality and good marketability, and is suitable for promotion and planting as a fresh-eating sweet potato variety across the province.
