The role and application methods of wheat straw and wheat chaff mulching
Wheat straw and wheat chaff mulching is the even scattering of wheat straw or wheat chaff around autumn crops or between rows to form a certain mulch layer, with an appropriate amount of soil pressed over it in spots so as to cover and preserve soil moisture. For wheat straw and wheat chaff mulching, it is necessary to properly grasp the principles of timing, mulching amount, and rational application of chemical fertilizers, etc.
1. Timing. The relatively suitable mulching time is from late June to early and mid-July. Too early makes it easy to press down the seedlings, while too late means the crop plants are tall and not easy to work with. After mulching, if there is no rain or the rainfall is insufficient, it will affect the rotting and decomposition of the straw, and the effect will be poor, so timely watering is needed. It is also possible to water at the first topdressing at the end of June.
2. Mulching amount. Generally, 100-150 kg per mu is suitable, and no more than 200 kg at most. Too little cannot play the role of preserving water, regulating temperature, and controlling weeds; too much makes the wheat straw not easy to rot, which will affect crop growth and the sowing of the next crop.
3. Rational application of chemical fertilizers. In the process of decomposing to form humus, wheat straw and wheat chaff absorb a certain amount of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, so for fields mulched with wheat straw and wheat chaff, the application amount of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers not only cannot be reduced, but should also be appropriately increased. Generally, increase the application by 7.5-15 kg of ammonium bicarbonate and 10-20 kg of superphosphate per mu.
4. In order to reduce the occurrence of diseases and ensure the quality of returning to the field, it is strictly prohibited to directly return diseased wheat straw and wheat chaff to the field. At the same time, for fields returned to the field, pay attention to the prevention and control of pests and diseases.
