Biaozha A1 is the first cotton hybrid in Henan Province successfully bred by the Institute of Plant Protection, Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This variety has a tall plant type with chicken-claw leaves, a plant height of 1.3-1.4 m, about 40 fruit branches per plant (including secondary fruit branches on vegetative branches), 40-60 bolls per plant, a single boll weight of 5.1 g, a lint percentage of about 41%, and good early maturity, with a growth period of 115-120 days. It is suitable for transplanting after the harvest of barley, wheat or rapeseed in the cotton regions of the Huang-Huai River basin and the Yangtze River basin, with a lint yield of 100-160 kg per mu, and a maximum yield of up to 200 kg per mu

Biaozha A1 flowers, sets bolls and opens bolls in a relatively concentrated manner. More than 10 main-stem fruit branches and more than 20 secondary fruit branches on vegetative branches can grow at the same time, and the bud stage is relatively short. Conventional cotton takes 28 days from squaring to flowering, while Biaozha A1 takes an average of 23 days from squaring to flowering, and only 18 days in the shortest case. In the same period of time, it can produce more flowers and set more bolls than conventional cotton.

In demonstrations in recent years, Biaozha A1 hybrid cotton transplanted after wheat has performed outstandingly. Farmer Wang Hongyun of Wangzhuang, Luyi County, planted 3.1 mu of Biaozha A1 in 2000 and averaged 121 kg of lint per mu; farmer Dai Mingxian of Anling Town, Huaiyang County, planted 9.1 mu of Biaozha A1 in 2001 and averaged 103 kg of lint per mu; and in 2002, more than 1,000 mu of contiguous Biaozha A1 transplanted after wheat in Sundukou Village, Zhangdian Township, Luyi County, averaged 110 kg of lint per mu. In 2003, when transplanted after wheat or rapeseed in Henan, Anhui, Shandong, Shaanxi, Hubei, Jiangxi and other places, Biaozha A1 increased yield by 40%-50% compared with conventional summer cotton and by about 25% compared with conventional cotton sown in spring or intercropped in wheat fields.

During cultivation, Biaozha A1 does not require shoot thinning and branch removal; all leaf branches are retained, or the weak lower vegetative branches are removed, leaving 2-3 strong vegetative branches per plant.

Biaozha A1 is highly resistant to cotton bollworm. Generally, no control is needed for the second generation of cotton bollworm. For the third and fourth generations of cotton bollworm, control should be carried out if there are more than 6 larvae per 100 plants. Pests such as cotton aphid, red spider, beet armyworm and plant bug should be controlled as appropriate.
