Introduction to the Taishu 66 variety and its cultivation points
Taishu 66 is a long-vine type variety, with vines about 2.0 m long, thick stems and vines, long internodes, and relatively long petioles, with 6-8 branches per plant; the leaves are large and heart-shaped; the veins are green, hairless, and few flowers are produced, and the sweet potato vines are semi-upright; each plant sets 3-4 tubers, and the tubers are cylindrical and very attractive; the skin is light brown and the flesh is orange-red. According to Taiwan data reports, Taishu 66 contains a variety of amino acids, and every 100 grams of fresh tubers contains 8-10 mg of anti-cancer carotene, more than 30% higher than ordinary sweet potato, while the leaves contain a variety of vitamins, and the calcium content is especially high. The leaves from the 20-60 cm-long vine tips have a crude protein content of 24.1-31.7%, and can be eaten as a green, high-quality substitute vegetable in the off-season from August to September, with a taste and quality no inferior to water spinach. The steamed tubers are mealy and sweet, suitable for processing and export for foreign exchange earnings. According to two years of testing, the average drying rate is 27.4%, and the average sun-drying rate in the field is 29%.
Yield performance of Taishu 66
Taishu 66 participated in the regional trial from 1994 to 1995, with an average fresh tuber yield of 1836.81 kg per mu. When Taishu 66 was cultivated as a mid-season sweet potato, its yield performance was very good. For example, in 1994, the Putian City Institute of Agricultural Sciences planted cuttings on 4.5 mu (paddy field) on June 25, and on December 7 and 9 of that year and January 5 of the following year, relevant experts from the province, city, and county conducted on-site inspections, with average fresh tuber yields of 3322.5, 3400, and 3557.5 kg per mu, respectively. In addition, trial plantings in various places also showed that Taishu 66 can achieve a good harvest under conditions of better fertilizer and water. For example, in 1995, Li Ruikai, an agricultural technician from Pujiang Village, Jiangkou Town, Putian County, used rice stubble field to plant cuttings on 0.38 mu. The average yield was 3436 kg per mu, 14.5% higher than the control Xinsonghua; in 1996, Lin Wendao of Sutang Village, Wushi Town, planted 20,000 mu of peanut intercropped sweet potato, with an average yield of 2034.6 kg per mu, 6.7% higher than the control Yanshu 8-6.
