Correct Methods and Techniques for Summer Pruning of Sichuan Pepper Trees
Girdling After girdling a Sichuan pepper tree, the effect on promoting flower bud formation is very good. Since Sichuan pepper trees form flower buds more easily than ordinary fruit trees, half-girdling is sufficient. The timing of girdling should be no later than early June. The width of the cut is generally 1/6 of the diameter of the branch or main trunk. If the tree is vigorous and conditions are good, it can be appropriately widened; otherwise it can be narrower. The girdling wound must be disinfected to prevent infection. Girdling is mainly for trees with vigorous vegetative growth, and it cannot be done continuously for fruiting either. After the first girdling, wait two or three years, and if the pepper tree is still growing vigorously, girdle once more. The number of times should not be too many, so as to avoid weakening the tree vigor and shortening its lifespan.
Pinching Depending on the severity, pinching can be divided into light pinching and heavy pinching. Light pinching means removing about 5 cm of the tender shoot tip from the top of the branch between May and July. Light pinching is mainly used on heavily fruiting trees, with the aim of suppressing vigorous vegetative growth and promoting flower bud formation. After pinching, the branch will sprout many small shoots, and light pinching must be done multiple times to achieve the goal.
Branch Bending With both hands, strip from the base of the branch, then hold and squeeze the middle part of the branch to change its direction. Branch bending is mainly used to open up the branch angle, soften the growth vigor of the branch, and promote its flower bud formation. Compared with methods such as propping and pulling, branch bending is simple, easy to do, effective, and does not damage the bark. Branch bending is mainly suitable for relatively thin branches. If the branch is thick and cannot be bent to the required angle, it can be combined with the method of hanging mud balls.
