Rice midge harms rice, how can it be controlled effectively?
Rice midge, commonly known as red worm or red thread worm, damages the young roots and young shoots of rice with its larvae, causing floating seedlings, and feeds on the embryo and endosperm of ungerminated seeds, preventing the seeds from germinating. Rice seedling fields and direct-seeded fields suffer severe damage.
The adult is a small moth, with wings shorter than the body; when resting, the front legs are raised and swing up and down. The larvae are red or pale yellow, with a limb-like protrusion on the ventral side of the prothorax. It occurs 2-3 generations per year, and the first generation damages rice. It overwinters as nymphs and adults in weeds. Adults appear in early May of the second year, lay eggs in late May, and the eggs hatch into larvae in 3-4 days and begin to cause damage. In 1999, due to the relatively low temperatures in the early period, the seedling recovery period after transplanting was prolonged, causing a major outbreak of rice midge in Changtu County. In 7 townships and towns including Tongjiangkou Township, Taiping Township, Changtu Station Township, and Baoli Town, rice was damaged to varying degrees, with an area of 1100 mu. Lightly damaged seedlings grew slowly, had few and short white roots, and 10%-20% of the leaves withered; severely damaged seedlings all turned yellow and died.
Control methods: 1. Agricultural control: Drain and sun-dry the field for 2-3 days, which can suppress the damage of rice midge. Changing from water-raised seedlings to dry-raised seedlings can reduce the damage of rice midge. 2. Chemical control: ① Use 10-15 grams of 90% crystalline trichlorfon, add 10-15 kg of water, and spray it into the rice clumps when the water depth is about 4 cm. ② After draining the field water, wait one day, hang a small bag containing trichlorfon at the water inlet for irrigation. When the irrigation water depth is about 3-4 cm, stop irrigation and plug the water inlet. After 12 hours, the larvae can be killed. ③ Use 1 kg of 5% phorate granules per mu, mix with 15 kg of soil (sand) and broadcast, which can also control other pests with very good results.
