(1) Variety source: Bred by the Crop Research Institute of the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1988 through the cross [(Wan Ya 2 x 2874) x (Caucasus x 2874)] x Mianyang 19, and selected in 1992.

(2) Characteristics: This variety is spring-type, with green seedlings, semi-erect growth, medium tillering ability, and a high spike-forming rate. Plant height is 80-90 cm, spike length is 8-11 cm, rectangular shape, long awns, red glumes, with 2r-30 spikelets per spike, 3--4 grains set in the middle spikelets, 38--42 grains per spike, red-skinned grains, oval shape, shallow ventral groove, semi-hard texture, 1000-grain weight of 45-50 g, and easy threshing by hand. Quality determination: test weight 770.8 g/L, flour yield 70%, crude protein 15.02%, wet gluten 41.1%. Disease resistance was identified by the Plant Protection Institute of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences from 1993-1996 as medium to high resistance to stripe rust, and medium to high susceptibility to powdery mildew and fusarium head blight, with resistance superior to the control 80--8. The whole growth period is about 190 days, 1-2 days earlier maturing than the control 80--8.

(3) Yield performance: In the two-year provincial regional trial in 1995 and 1996, the average yield per mu was 372.5 kg and 330.1 kg, respectively, increasing by 6.3% and 6.2% compared with the control 80-8; and increasing by 7.9% compared with Mianyang 26. In the 1996 production trial, the average yield per mu at 5 sites was 305.4 kg, increasing by 10.1% compared with 80-8.

(4) Suitable planting areas: Suitable for planting throughout the province. In fields with good fertilizer and water conditions, density should be controlled, and attention should be paid to the prevention and control of fusarium head blight and powdery mildew.
