Rice carefully bred for 6 years finally yields a high-quality new variety
A kilogram of rice sold for a high price of 188 Hong Kong dollars?! A reporter learned yesterday at the provincial agriculture and forestry crop breeding research summary meeting that this was a @#@136@#@ record once set by the Ezhong No. 5 rice bred in our province.
Ezhong No. 5 rice is the fruit of 6 years of selective breeding by scientific and technical personnel in our province. According to the introduction, He Shengqiu of the Rural Science and Technology Division of the Provincial Department of Science and Technology found the rice very delicious when visiting abroad in 1998, so he brought back 107 grains of rice and handed them to Chen Yiyi, a researcher at the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Chen Yiyi treasured them like a precious treasure, and in November of that year he took 100 grains of rice to the Hainan breeding base for selective breeding.
In April of the following year, the 100 grains of rice became several jin of seed rice. Chen Yiyi and other experts then planted these seeds in an experimental field in Wuchang. The seed rice produced many variant plants different from the original variety. From these variant plants, the experts selected those meeting the breeding requirements and carried out repeated selective breeding, finally developing Ezhong No. 5, which is completely different from the original variety. Ezhong No. 5 tastes fragrant and soft, and surpasses Thai fragrant rice in certain indicators.
During Hong Kong, China Hubei Week in 2005, Ezhong No. 5 rice submitted by Hubei Jingshan Guobao Qiaomi Company sold for the sky-high price of 188 Hong Kong dollars per kilogram during exhibition sales in Hong Kong, China. Last year, the selective breeding and industrial development of Ezhong No. 5 won first prize in our province's Science and Technology Progress Award.
