Pests and Diseases Increase in Single-Season Rice, Do Not Relax Control Efforts
This year, the single-season rice planting area in our province is 6.0143 million mu. Currently, most single-season rice has entered the late tillering stage to the young panicle differentiation stage. According to recent incomplete statistics from various regions, various pests and diseases have occurred in 2.5 million mu of single-season rice fields, an increase of 40% compared to the same period last year, including 1 million mu of rice planthopper, 500,000 mu of rice leaf roller, 400,000 mu of stem borer, 400,000 mu of sheath blight, and 80,000 mu of rice blast.
1. Rice planthopper: This year, the occurrence of rice planthopper is severe, and the large amount of foreign insect sources migrating in is rare in past years. Most fields have greatly exceeded the control threshold. According to light trap observations at the Pucheng County Plant Protection Station, from June 11 to July 6, a total of 98,936 white-backed planthoppers were trapped, 3.6 times that of the same period last year.
2. Rice leaf roller: This year, the early migration of rice leaf roller was low. After June, the field insect population grew rapidly. The fourth (3rd) generation leaf roller larvae have generally occurred and caused damage, with heavier damage in some areas. Recent field surveys at various monitoring points showed an average of 20-50 larvae per 100 hills, with the highest reaching 340 larvae per 100 hills, and a leaf rolling rate of 3-10%. Currently, most larvae are at the 2nd-3rd instar, which is the appropriate control period.
3. Locusts: This year, the first generation of the striped stem borer occurred generally heavily, and the egg stage was long, causing the striped stem borer to also occur commonly in early-planted single-season rice fields, with more residual insects. In late June, a large number of second-generation striped stem borer adults appeared under light traps, and the number of insects attracted by light traps was generally higher than last year. At the Xiaotao point in Yong'an City, from June 1 to 21, the number of striped stem borer adults attracted by light traps reached 3,663, 76 times that of the same period last year and more than 100 times the normal year. Currently, most areas have entered the peak hatching period of the second-generation striped stem borer eggs, causing dead hearts and dead sheaths in single-season rice fields.
4. Sheath blight: This year, sheath blight occurred heavily in the early season, leaving more residual fungal sources. The heavy rainfall in mid-to-late June caused a relatively severe occurrence of sheath blight pathogens in early-planted single-season rice.
5. Rice blast: Due to the relatively severe occurrence of rice blast in the early season, more pathogen sources were left for single-season rice. Currently, single-season rice is at the most susceptible tillering stage, and acute-type leaf blast lesions have been found in the fields. The main affected varieties (combinations) are II You Hang I, Liangyou 2186, D You 527, II You 162, etc., with an average diseased leaf rate of 3-12%. The Jianyang District Plant Protection Station surveyed super rice fields in Masha on July 6 and found leaf blast occurring in 36 mu, with a hill incidence rate of 28%, a plant incidence rate of 11%, a leaf incidence rate of 3.7%, and a disease index of 2.3.
