How to prevent single-clove garlic? Garlic farmers need to master these management methods
1. For autumn-planted garlic, plow and turn the land immediately after the previous crop is harvested, with a plowing depth of more than 28 cm, plow finely and harrow thoroughly, level the land and make beds. The bed width should preferably be 1.5-2 m, and the bed length generally should not exceed 30 m. For convenience of watering, 20-25 m is preferable. Garlic is a shallow-rooted crop, with shallow roots and weak fertilizer uptake capacity, and it has relatively high requirements for the quality of base fertilizer. Choose a complete-effect, high-quality organic fertilizer and apply it fully in one application. For night soil, do not use raw manure; before application it must be fully decomposed, crushed and mixed evenly, to prevent fermentation in the field, which can cause garlic maggot damage and affect seedling growth and development. Generally apply 5000-6000 kg of fully decomposed high-quality organic fertilizer, together with 40-50 kg of superphosphate, 25-30 kg of potassium sulfate, and 5-10 kg of garlic-specific compound microelement fertilizer. For acidic soil, apply 100-150 kg of quicklime before plowing to neutralize the acidity.
2. Selection of seed garlic. Seed garlic is the main source of nutrients during the garlic seedling stage, and the garlic seedling stage lasts as long as 160-180 days, so the size and quality of the seed garlic also greatly affects product quality. That is, the larger the seed clove, the stronger the plant growth, and the heavier the garlic formed. Therefore, at harvest time, according to the varietal characteristics, first select plants in the field, and before sowing select cloves again, choosing clean, white, plump garlic cloves free of disease and injury as seed garlic. Generally choose 70-130 cloves per 500 g of garlic cloves. Such garlic cloves store more nutrients, and under the same cultivation conditions, plant height, leaf number, number of bulbils, and the weight of garlic scapes and garlic bulbs are all higher than those of small-clove garlic. Moreover, using such garlic cloves as seed makes single-clove garlic less likely to appear.
3. Strengthen field management of garlic in the middle and late stages, topdress and water in time, and meet the needs of garlic for differentiating multiple bulbs. After the Spring Festival, generally apply 25-40 kg of diammonium phosphate and 15-20 kg of potassium sulfate, and water in a timely manner depending on soil moisture and weather conditions.
4. Garlic should be planted in neutral soil; otherwise, if the soil is too alkaline, that is, if the pH value is too high, there will be many single-clove garlic plants.
