Breeding institution: Zhoukou Prefecture Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Henan Province.

Approval status: approved by the Henan Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee in 1997 and by the National Crop Variety Approval Committee in 2000.

Variety approval number: Guoshenmai 20000007.

Variety source: Zhou 8425B / Yumai 17.

Characteristics: spring type, compact plant type, plant height about 85 cm. Long awns, white glumes, white grains, spindle-shaped spike, 1000-grain weight 37 g. Test weight 796 g/L, protein content 13.7%, wet gluten content 32.8%, sedimentation value 27.8 mL, water absorption 61.7%, stability time 6.8 minutes. Mid-early maturing, strong lodging resistance, slightly poor cold tolerance, highly resistant to stripe rust and leaf rust, moderately resistant to sheath blight, moderately susceptible to powdery mildew, highly susceptible to stem rust and fusarium head blight. In 1998 and 1999, it participated in the national spring water group regional trial for the southern Huang-Huai region. In 1998, across 18 sites, 13 sites showed yield increases and 5 showed decreases, with an average yield of 375.2 kg per mu, 5.4% higher than the control Yumai 18; in 1999, the trial continued, across 14 sites, 12 sites showed increases and 2 showed decreases, with an average yield of 458 kg per mu, 9.91% higher than the control. In 1999, production trials were also conducted at 9 sites in Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Shaanxi; except for 1 site in Shaanxi that showed a decrease, the other 8 sites showed increases, with an average yield of 444.8 kg per mu, 10.98% higher than the control.

Cultivation points: the best sowing period is October 14-20. Sowing rate 7-10 kg per mu. It is fertilizer-tolerant, so sufficient basal fertilizer should be applied and topdressing done early. In the later stage, pay attention to controlling aphids and other pests and diseases. It is prone to sprouting on the spike, so timely harvesting and storage are needed.
