What to Do When Wheat Seedlings Turn Yellow? Common Causes and Control Methods
@#@245@#@When wheat grows into the winter and spring seasons, the seedlings often turn yellow or even die, and applying fertilizer alone cannot make them turn green again. There are several types of yellowing in wheat seedlings, and if remedial measures are not taken in time, they can cause serious reductions in wheat yield.
Yellowing from pests: yellowing of leaves caused by wheat aphids and wheat mites sucking leaf sap, occurring mainly around the overwintering period. Per 667 sq m, use 65-75 ml of 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate mixed with 50 kg of water for spray control.
Yellowing from disease: wheat sheath blight damages the root system and stems, hindering the transport of nutrients and water and causing wheat leaves to turn yellow. Per 667 sq m, use 20 g of 12.5% hexaconazole or 50 g of 20% jinggangmycin mixed with 50 kg of water for stem-base spray control.
Yellowing from insufficient fertility: occurs mainly in plots with poor soil fertility and a serious shortage of base fertilizer, manifesting mainly as yellow color, poor tillering ability and weak seedlings. Such wheat fields require not only sufficient organic fertilizer but also an appropriate additional amount of chemical fertilizer. Per 667 sq m, apply 7.5-10 kg of urea and 30 kg of phosphate fertilizer, deeply applied in furrows; per 667 sq m, use 1 kg of urea plus 5 ml of Yemianbao mixed with 50 kg of water for foliar spray, which can prompt the leaf color to turn green rapidly.
Yellowing from excessive density: uneven sowing or excessive seeding rate makes the wheat field population density too high, which can also cause wheat seedlings to turn yellow. The remedial measures are to thin the seedlings promptly and topdress in time. If the jointing stage has already begun, the method of pressing the seedlings can be used as a remedy.
Yellowing from stiff seedlings: occurs mainly in fields with heavy clay soil and low-lying terrain. The remedial measures are to promptly clear the drainage ditches, drain away accumulated water, lower the groundwater level and field humidity, cultivate and loosen the soil in time, and topdress with quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer.
