Zhenmai 5 (Zhen 99036) is a spring-type, medium-maturity wheat variety bred by the Zhenjiang Institute of Agricultural Sciences of the Jiangsu Hilly Region through hybridization of Yangmai 158 and Ningmai 9. This variety has long awns, white glumes, and spindle-shaped spikes; the grains have red seed coats and are hard; the seedlings are erect, the plant type is relatively compact, and the plant height is 93 cm, with average fertilizer tolerance and lodging resistance; the effective spike number per mu is 300,000, with 33 grains per spike and a 1,000-grain weight of 38 g. Inoculation identification shows moderate resistance to Fusarium head blight, susceptibility to sheath blight, and resistance to wheat spindle streak mosaic virus disease, with better disease resistance than Yangmai 158. The three-year average quality analysis results are crude protein

The three-year average quality analysis results are 14.3% crude protein content, 30.6% wet gluten content, and 3.4 minutes stabilization time, belonging to the medium-gluten variety type.

This variety participated in the Jiangsu Province regional trial from 200 to 2003, with a two-year average yield of 337.4 kg per mu; in the 2003-2004 production trial, the average yield was 400.7 kg per mu. It is suitable for planting under medium-to-high fertility conditions in the Huainan wheat region of Jiangsu Province, with the optimal sowing period from October 25 to November 5.
