Five practical methods to protect wheat seedlings from freezing and cold
When the severe winter comes, doing a good job of protecting overwintering crops such as wheat from the winter cold and taking preventive measures is an important guarantee for obtaining a bumper harvest. According to different field plots, the following five methods can be used to prevent freezing and protect seedlings.
First, spreading grass to protect seedlings. Some varieties with strong spring habit are sown relatively late, emerge sparsely, and have fewer tillers. For such field plots, cover them with crop straw such as wheat straw and rice straw to keep them warm, promote tiller growth, prevent freezing and strengthen seedlings, so that the wheat seedlings can safely overwinter.
Second, applying fertilizer and water to the roots. For field plots where wheat seedlings have shallow roots and few tillers, use a small amount of fertilizer and a large amount of water to irrigate the roots, increasing field humidity and achieving the goal of protecting roots, protecting seedlings, and strengthening seedlings.
Third, irrigating to moisten the roots. Under continuous drought and relatively low field humidity, when cold weather occurs, the wheat seedling root system is prone to freezing damage. For such field plots that are high and dry with somewhat low humidity, water should be run through the soil or watering should be used to combat drought. At the same time, attention should be paid to loosening the soil in time after drought relief to prevent the soil from becoming stiff and inactive or from returning to salinity and alkalinity.
Fourth, banking the roots with mixed fertilizer. By increasing the application of ash and mixed fertilizer, soil fertility can be increased, and the goals of protecting roots from freezing and protecting and strengthening seedlings can also be achieved.
Fifth, spreading soil to protect seedlings. Make use of the idle winter season to transport thin ditch mud and thin river mud to the wheat fields and spread soil to protect seedlings. For seedling fields with large ridge surfaces and few moisture ditches, add more moisture ditches. In this way, the wheat field water system is improved, and the effect of enriching the soil and protecting seedlings can also be achieved.
