New japonica rice variety Zhengdao 18 passes national approval, combining high yield, disease resistance and good quality

Zhengdao 18 is a new japonica rice variety with high yield, disease resistance and wide adaptability, bred by the Grain Crops Research Institute of the Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 2005, plant variety right protection was applied for, with announcement number CNA002221E. In 2006, it passed provincial approval in Henan, and in August 2007 it passed national approval.

I. Characteristics: The whole growth period is about 152 days, the plant type is compact, the plant height is 95 cm, growth is vigorous, tillering ability is strong, the effective panicle rate is high, the stems are thick, the leaf color is green, the flag leaf is short and held upright, and the leaf sheath is green; the panicle length is 16 cm, the grains are densely set, the grain shape is short and round, and threshability is moderate; it ripens to a good yellow color in the later stage and has good yielding ability; the number of filled grains per panicle is 145, and the 1000-grain weight is 26 g.

II. Yield performance: In 2004-2005, it took part in the Henan provincial japonica rice regional trial, with 22 test locations, ranking first among the tested varieties and increasing yield by 8.95% compared with the control Yujing 6, reaching an extremely significant level. In the 2005 Henan provincial japonica rice production trial, among the 9 test sites across the province, the yield of Zhengdao 18 ranked first among the tested varieties, increasing yield by 12.5% compared with the control Yujing 6. In 2005-2006, it took part in the national northern rice regional trial, increasing yield by 10.8% compared with the control Yujing 6, reaching an extremely significant level. In 2005, demonstrations in Yuanyang, Henan, and Huayuankou, Zhengzhou, and other places reached a yield of 680 kg per mu, while the control Yujing 6 yielded only about 450 kg per mu. In the 2006 high-yield demonstration, the average yield of a 100-mu block was 650 kg per mu, and the highest yield reached 780.2 kg per mu.

On September 6 this year, in the 100-mu demonstration block in Chiqi Village, Xinfeng Town, Dafeng City, field measurements showed an actual effective panicle number of 232,000 panicles per mu, an average total grain number per panicle of 148, an estimated filled grain number of 130, and a 1000-grain weight of 26 g, giving a theoretical yield of 784.2 kg per mu.

III. Resistance. Through disease resistance identification and field observation, Zhengdao 18 is not only resistant to neck blast, bacterial leaf blight and others, but also has particularly outstanding resistance to stripe disease, which has commonly occurred in recent years.

IV. Quality. Through quality analysis and testing, Zhengdao 18 has a brown rice rate of 85.1%, a milled rice rate of 74.7%, a head milled rice rate of 70.3%, a chalky grain rate of 23.5%, a chalkiness degree of 3.0%, an amylose content of 16.7%, a gel consistency of 82 mm, a transparency grade of 1, and an alkali spreading value of grade 7. The grain length is 5 mm, and the grain length-to-width ratio is 1.8. The rice quality reaches the national standard grade 3 standard.

Suitable planting areas: This variety is suitable for planting in the japonica rice areas of Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui and other provinces, as well as the rice areas in northern and southern Henan.
