Introduction to the Characteristics and Traits of the Xinmai 18 Wheat Variety

Breeding institution: Xinxiang City Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Henan Province. Passed national approval in 2004 (National Approval Wheat 2004005).

Characteristics and traits: a semi-winter, short-stalked, medium-maturing variety. Robust, with semi-erect seedlings, good cold resistance, strong tillering ability, and a high spike-setting rate; in spring it joints and elongates slightly late, but the differentiation of the two poles is rapid. Plant height is around 80 cm, the plant type is slightly loose, and lodging resistance is relatively strong; the spike layer is thick, the spikes are large and uniform, and seed-setting is relatively good. It is tolerant of moisture and late-stage high temperatures and colors well at maturity. Overall disease resistance is good, the three yield components are well coordinated, and it has good high and stable yield, vitreous grains, and good grain appearance for the commercial market. It is highly resistant to leaf rust, moderately resistant to powdery mildew and stripe rust, and moderately susceptible to leaf blight and sheath blight.

Cultivation points: this variety should be sown early at the appropriate time, from October 5 to 20; the sowing rate is 7.5 kg per mu, and the sowing rate should be appropriately increased for late sowing; topdress and irrigate at the end of jointing, and pay attention to irrigating early with the grain-filling water, which helps achieve high yield and the quality indicators of high-quality strong gluten.

Suitable areas: suitable for early and middle stubble in high- and medium-yield fertile irrigated land in Henan Province, northern Anhui Province, northern Jiangsu Province, and the Guanzhong area of Shaanxi in the southern part of the Huang-Huai winter wheat region.
